Front suspension/steering issues

In the month I have owned my 07GP, I have gathered the feeling that there are worn parts somewhere in the front suspension.

I am getting a bit of a pop or tap that I feel in the wheel when backing up and turning. Also, yesterday I heard a groan or moan when making a left turn.

I am thinking possibly a worn tie rod and/or sector shaft. One or both of these would also explain why I experienced a bit of swaying from side to side under a full power acceleration run even though i had a good grip on the wheel re torque steer.

I am still under warranty (26k) , so the dealer will be doing the fixing. I just like to know if there are any common issues in this area before I hit the dealer.

.

Any thoughts from the group please?????????????

The common areas that I would concentrate on from the description you gave, would be the CV shafts and the wheel bearings. Torque steer is normal in these cars. But you may want to have the tie rod ends (both inner and outer) checked. These are probably the most common problems, but I would start with the CV shafts (for the pop) and the wheel bearing (for the hum).

Spent the morning at my local dealer, and came away with a new intermediate shaft part #25913680 for my efforts.

At first, the tech took a drive and said he could not duplicate the issue. Even had it up on the rack, and pronounced that ball joints, tie rods, bushings, etc, were all hunky dory.

At my request, he did one more exam. I explained that especially when backing up and turning the wheel to the right, there is a tapping/knocking that you can feel in the wheel.

15 minutes later service writer came back and said they would be replacing the I-shaft.

I cannot believe the difference in the feel of the steering post repair. I would urge anyone who feels like there is a steering issue with their GP to look long and hard at the I-shaft.

Makes me wonder if GM had a bad run of parts on these, as my Mom's 05 G6 is on its 3rd one, and she only has 55k on

IIRC her first one was done at 26k, and I am just over 27k now.

MS:

I don't have a firm amount, but from what I could tell the shaft itself is around $100 + an hour of labor to install. My guess would be $180-$225 bucks.
