Freon+working compressor= no cold air??

if you don't properly oil balance the compressor during replacement, the compressor is oil starved and it last about 1 season.
 


Oil balance? We just followed the directions on the compressor which was to add 3oz of oil because it comes "primed".

You have to make sure. Moisture in a refrigerant system is a no-no. Could be why your compressor died.

But anyway hopefully all works out for you
 
As long as you followed the instructions (in regards to oil balancing) that came with the compressor you should be fine. Each major component (evap, condenser, accumulator, compressor) has a oil volume that resides in each part as oil circulates in suspension with the refrigerant. that volume should be added when the part is replaced. the total system volume may be 6 oz with 3 of it existing in the compressor sump.

The question is why did the new compressor fail?
gm dealers have a filter screen kit; installed on the compressor inlet to protect the new compressor after a compressor failure. If you have another failure, install the screen.

and yep, moisture and refrigerant form acid...
 
Wait.. so do you add oil to the compressor itself AND through the low side port?

yes. When oil balancing the compressor, oil is added or removed from the compressor and then the compressor is installed. oil for other components can be added to the low side port.

instructions vary to determine the amount to add or remove, so i always follow the directions that come with the compressor.

for example: one company may want you to drain the old compressor and add that volume of new oil to the new compressor. If nothing comes out, add 3 oz.
 


Well I didn't put oil in through the low side.. How much do I need to put in?
