Fixing Scratched Glass

Is there a way to fix a scratched up windsheild. I just bought a 94 firebird for my wife and the windshield has a million scratches in it. It looks like it was driven behind a dump truck leaking playground rocks @100mph for a substantial amount of time. I'd rather not spend 300 on a new windshield if I don't have to.
 


If that doesn't work. You'll need one brick, a bit of arm strength and throw it through the window then pick up your cell phone and call your insurance company ;)
 
It turns out I don't have glass coverage.....and I already threw the brick. Lol

What would you recommend to use to polish the glass?
 
There are polishes designed for glass use. I'm not sure what you have at your disposal but if you happen to have a buffer should make easy work if the scratches aren't deep
