Fiberglass Hood Painting

Picked up an SD hood for a decent price, only problem is it's white and may car is black... I have a cheap HVLP gun that I've used before with some less than great results. Is there any canned paint that would do an OK job on something this size? I've also never pained anything this big made of fiberglass before, is there anything special to know about painting it?

Not looking for perfection since my car is far from perfect, just a decent paint job that costs less than the body shop charges. Any advice?

 


I've found it best to subject the hood to several hot / cold cycles after initial cleaning and sanding. I'd suggest sealer even over sanded primer on fiberglass. Most paint brands will have a single stage formula for your color but you may not find a factory packaged single stage. If you're willing to clearcoat it, finding that color in a factory mixed form should be do-able. I don't like know of what color Rustoleum or Duplicolor matches right up, lol. Probably neither.
 


I got this car partially confused with booba's and gave a totally wrong response. Yes you should swap with him!

But- since the hood is already painted and you'll just spray over that, zero special treatment applies. Any brand of generic black should match fairly well. If you use something 2K on top, it should look and last great and be a simple job.
 
Ok, so no prep beyond the usual sanding. Sounds like I'll be trying my hand at the gun again if ya say 2K will be best. And do these black cars have a clear on them from the factory or is is single stage?

This. They come with base / clear and its best to go back with that because single stage looks too dark by comparison, and any refinish work thats been done will be base / clear. Most factory pack black (like PPG 9300 or DuPont 99) matches closely. Since its black that gives you the option of using a lower quality basecoat (it will cover, its black) and upping the clearcoat quality a notch, within compatible paint lines. Sorry for the confusion, and hope I didn't just add more.
 


No that does help. Just hope I can do better with the gun than I did last time. Orange peel city... I did accidently let it sit in the sun before it was dry so that probably didn't help.

Practice makes perfect on the gun, practice with water (if stainless passages) and get familiar with all the knobs + speed and distance. Its all in the knobs man. Thats not a boob reference lol. Clearcoat does have a learning curve.
 
Practice on some stuff around the house you think needs painted. It's not likely you will get the perfect flow if you've only used a gun a couple times. Once you figure the knobs out, it takes a lot of practice to get the feel for speed and distance. But I wouldn't worry about it too much, get enough clear on it and you can sand and polish it to look flawless.
