I'm looking to but a 98-ish Firebird with a manual transmission. the 6 cylinders area lot less money and more economical on gas. but a v8 is... well a v8.
i have all of the parts to do a top swap on a 3800 so all i would have to but to supercharge it is fluids and a pcm tune. my dad is a mechanic and i really enjoy working on cars too so i think it would be not only unique but really fun to do. what are your opinions/ thoughts?

not worth having a v6 fbody unless you want something unique. it's also not as easy to just slap the blower on the car. there are thing different you have to do in comparison to the wbody platform.

turbo V6 would be cool.

or CSC.

but again, no weight savings compared to the LS1 models and that would be the only reason to go with the six over the eight.

Also if you land a T56 car you shouldnt have to worry about the transmission nearly as much as if you had a T5.

didn't even take into consideration the differences in the body. although all of it could be changed except the brake louvers i would think.

Dont get me wrong I totally love my GTP... but if someone offered to trade me a 6speed LS1 Firebird for it, I wouldn't even hesitate lol. LS1s sound amazing and haul major butt. Plus arent they more reliable than the 3800s?

I would be surprised if you don't get a solid 30MPG highway with the T56 double overdrive.

Cam with full bolt-ons in my 98 Formula M6 and I pulled 29 highway Owner before me pulled 31mpg driving to florida. Plus I beat the piss out of that car and it never skipped a beat.

A friend of mine who bought the car has put over 100 passes through the quarter and only minor problems such as grenaded bell housing (doing donuts in a parking lot). Actually the car saw 28 passes in a single day. Hot lapped the hell out of it.

They also love running warm. Consecutive pulls on the dyno and each run with temperature building it picked up 5 rwhp

I see about 25-27 mpg on the interstate.

It's hard to go turn down an LS1, but if you already have the GP, and the means to top swap, do it. If you aren't happy with it, then maybe look into teh LS1. In most cases V8>V6, but since you've been on this road long enough to top swap right now, might as well stay on it till it forks.

My 2 cents...STAY THE COURSE

EDIT: my wife just read this post and told me to stop being the DR Phil of "should I mod my car",

3800 turbo any day. sorry not a v8 guy, i like to build something fast and unique, something that no body in my area has done so i am able to say there is not another car like mine close by! not dissing v8 but every1 has them cuz there already fast, a 3800 is a slow engine unless u build it then your running with the v8's and there like wtf a 3800 is keeping up or beating me? my .02
