Engine runs bad after traction control comes on then back off

1998 Grand Prix 3800 GT. Sometimes after the traction control is activated the engine seems to say in traction control mode. It runs horrible/stumbles and the exhaust smells really bad. After a couple of ignition cycles or a long drive then it goes back to normal. It doesn't happen every time the traction control is activated, only some of the time. It seems like the engine stays in traction control mode. It happened last year and now that we just started getting snow it is happening again this winter. Does anyone have any clues?

Are there any lights lit up on the dash (ABS comes to mind)? From your description it sounds like whenever it is wet/snowy out there is an issue which leads me to think something is getting wet and causing the issue (i.e.- shorting out). Might want to check your front hub harness at both front wheels and see if there are any wires that are missing insulation or look damaged. The harness from the hubs to the main loom are known to be issues. I had to replace my front pass. side harness on my 00 GT because the wiring was shot for at least 4" back from where the connector was.
