Engine Removal...up or down? Tips??

So it looks like ill be pulling the engine in my GTX. Whats the best way? Go out the top or drop the subframe? Ive swapped many a SHO motor and dropping the subframe is by far the fastest way. Is this the same with our GPs? Plus any removal tips would be greatly appreciated. Im pretty mech inclined so i feel pretty sure about doing this myself. plus my dad owned a mechanic shop for several years. I spun a rod bearing in my last gtp several years ago and took the motor out the top, but is was alot of work. If theres better way im all ears!

id think if your just pulling the engine, take it out the top. dropping the sub frame requires you to get an alignment when you put it back in.

out the bottom, your talking taking the axles out, the ball joints, un do the lines and wires for the trans, and abs unbolting the rack, dropping the sub frame bolts, then lift the car one way or another. plus all the same stuff to get the engine un done. so out the bottom for just the engine is twice the work in the end.

tips for out the top: you need to take the master cylinder off, ( for clearance) and the a/c compressor, ( unless its dry or you have it vac'ed out) the p/s pump is always cleaner to leave behind as well.

I just pulled two out the top for my swap project. Honestly, I think it's easier to come out of the bottom, and it gives you a chance to clean everything up easier.

I was able to pull both motors (04 GT, 04 CompG) without removing the MC it oil filter. You will want to pull the A/C and PS pump though.

Rob..if you want what I think is the easiest way, search my user name and "E asy" without the space. Personally out the top to me for motor only is cake. Out the bottoom is more stuff, it's likely preference from your Ford days. Whether working on the ground or a lift, for me top for motor only is faster. No axles, trans fluid or alignment. Once motor is out..power wash and reinstall.

Scott, MC is when you pull the trans at the same time.

NEED is a strong word. I haven't ever removed it to pull from the top. You just have to use a little muscle to shimmy it out of the way.

X2. I've pulled every motor out the top without removing the filter housing. It can get caught up if you aren't watching for it I have ran into that

Justin..the W body filter adapter sticks straight out toward the passenger wheel. It's the furthest item from the block. Unlike the perfect H body where there's no worries. Perfect I say..perfect.
