Engine not starting - power to dash and headlights

Hey all,
Been awhile since I've had to post, but you guys have always been very reliable when it came to any tech issues. My 2000 grand prix GT won't turn over. 2 weeks ago I replaced the battery, and a mechanic replaced my negative battery cable as he said it wasn't conducting enough energy through that line. Once that was done, she has been firing up perfect the last 2 weeks without issue.

This morning was another story though, and exact same symptoms as last time. Headlights come on, do not dim, and the stereo and dash all light up. My security light does not blink, but the engine won't turn over at all. There is no repeated clicking from the starter either. Car runs fine so it shouldn't be an alternator issue (mechanic also said that checked out fine.)

I spoke with another mechanic this morning, he suggested tapping the starter when trying to start it, or disconnecting the battery and re connecting. Fuel pump was replaced 2 years ago and is in good working condition, and i can hear it engage when i try to start the vehicle.

ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point. I have also tried boosting the car to no avail. Please advise and I apologize if this is the improper place to post.

Thanks again guys/gals!

giving the start a few shots with a hammer while someone is turning the key may make it fire up the starter, if it does you need a new starter.

you can also re check the grounds that your mechanic was just working on, they are on the bell housing bolt above the starter. make sure they are tight/clean. same for the battery.

Thanks. My mechanic actually recommended giving it a tap with a hammer as well. I will give that a shot tonight. So if it does fire up with the tap, then i should replace the starter, correct?

correct.

it can take a few good solid shots.

what can also happen is the gear that pops out and meets the flex plate and turns the engine over will sometime stay out, and not retract, that will keep it from starting as well. when that happens most of the time the starter solenoid is shot. its the part that the wires hook up to. and is replaceable if on a budget.
