Empty bolt hole leaking oil. What goes there?

Hi Everyone,

I have been getting some work done on my gtp, seals and gaskets leaking making a mess. Thats all cleaned up and done but now that everything is sealed up again and the motor steam cleaned this bolt hole is leaking oil.

It is right behind the water pump in between the belt. My mechanic is good, but he doesn't know these cars like all of you. What is supposed to be there? Just a bolt or something else?

Thanks for your help.

forgot to add it is a 97 Gtp. This is a replacement crate motor that was installed in 2004. The shop working on it is the shop that swapped original motor for this one.

this is actually a 96 na block but they are all the same really. mine seems to have some kind of plug there. that area is right into the lifter valley, high up, but i could see oil making its way out. would also be causing some un metered air to get in the engine making it run off a bit. im sure you could just plug it with rtv, theres no vacuum pressure to speak of really.

iirc a 10x 1.5 thread "plug" boilt goes in there. that boss is only used on the G/H bodies with the earlier cast iron front engine mount that makes it such a PITA to replace G/H body belts.

get a short (less than 20mm UHL) m10 x 1.5 bolt and toss it in there. allen head may be easier to get to as the original bolt/pluig is a torx drive

Thanks for the pic, thats great. I was thinking, that isnt where one of the engine hoist things attach to is it? I have mine off the motor.

Nope..those go up front driver side off exhaust/head and rear passenger side. That hole might have a loose ground wire with a loop hole connector nearby. If so.. ground it with that bolt when you put it in.

Hi guys,

thanks for all the info, the prob im having is that i have zzp's intercooler and when a bolt is put in that hole the engine builds a bunch of pressure according to my mechanic. He doesn't like that.
This is a replacement crate motor installed in 04, this bolt hole has never had a bolt in it. It weeps oil when nothing is there, now i know why i always smelled oil when i used my ac or heater.
Was I supposed to get a breather oil cap when i got the ic back in 04? No one ever said that was necessary. We are not using the zzp gasket at the moment, i see on their site they say that you cannot cut a stock gasket to work right.
Do i need to get the zzp gasket? I had it when i installed the ic and it has been on since 04 with no prob. I forgot about it until the other day when this bolt/pressure problem cropped up.

So looking at the thread it looks like i need to drill out that brass plug in my tb and drill a hole in my oil filler cap and run a vacuum line between them? or run a breather oil filler cap.
Those are my options? I have a early 97 gtp built in aug of 96 if that helps.

I look at zzp's breather and they say you need to to a pcm programming change if you run the breather. but, this bolt hole has been open since i did the ic and a custom tune by paul back in probably 05ish. Do i really need a new tune, or change on the pcm to run a breather, seems this open bolt hole has been breathing in the front of the motor for 17yrs just fine. I am in socal so i have been passing smog tests fine.
I don't have anyone that can do programming around here. so, i shouldn't run the breather and should do the drilling and line?

not knowing your tune, but sealing off that port and running a vac line to the tb is the only way to keep un metered air from getting into the engine. if it was tuned with the hole open, maybe a breather would do. were talking a in car tune? or a canned tune?

paul from prj performance came out to so cal back in 05 i think it was and tuned a bunch of the gp's here. He custom tuned it then. The sc was put on before then and there was no mention that i can recall of breathers. but, i wonder if the guy that i helped do it pulled the plug out of the hole then. I dont remember him saying anything or doing it but obv it was done and it was a long time ago.
i doubt it came that way from the factory. and if it did, it just so happened to help me when i put a ic on the engine that needs a breather somewhere. maybe the guy that did the ic install didnt know the hole would weep oil.

plus the shop thats doing the work now, is the shop that installed the new motor back in 04. they caught this now, i doubt they wouldn't have then.

oh i reread your comments, un metered air. since the car has been getting unmetered air from the bolt hole for so long and was tuned that way, wouldn't it be better to have non metered air going in?
