Dumb Question, Probably Impossible

I have a 1998 Grand Prix se with a 3100.

The crank pulley wobbles. I have heard this is bc of some rubber isolator GM thought was a good idea to put on the pulley deteriorating causing it to wobble.

And I am a poor colege student who needs this car to get me through the winter without spending large amounts of money on it.

A new one at orielys on an account, is 80 something dollars, cant afford that, but i do have a crank pulley off of a 2001 Camaro with an ls1. Does anyone know if by chance these parts could be used interchangeably. Or of any way to fix the one I have.

I dont think they would be interchangeable since the LS1 balancer would be balancing a larger crank and such, might even be larger in size too. I dont know all this for fact but that would be my thoughts on it. I dont know of anyway to fix the one you have other than to replace it.

X2^^^ Not interchangeable, eventually the rubber will let go entirely and make a knocking sound that will sound like the engine is falling apart. These are not fixable. Included below is an email address to Ed Morad of Morad Parts Company. I think a used HB will be just the trick for you. Contact him, I'm sure he will have something in stock for you.

Something like that wouldn't try to "interchange" anyway. Even if it is the slightest bit off in measurement it could mean no bueno for the engine internals. I would agree with Blown97...hit up Ed @ Morad Parts Company...he should be able to get you set up. I got a motor from him last winter and havent been happier...plus I flog the crap out of it all the time and it is still as good as when I got it :D

Are the ones off of the same year 3.8 interchangeable?

No. 3800s use a different balancer from the 60* V6 family (3100, 3400, 3500, 3900).

The rubber isn't some stupid idea GM had on a whim. Most harmonic balancers use rubber to do its job. Balance and smooth harmonics generated by the harsh jolts of the combustion stroke. Produces a smooth feel of power, and smooth motion on the serpentine belts instead of a jerking motion.

correct.

my HB came apart on my 3.5 intrigue, it was gnarly destroyed the serpentine belt and the piece that was ribbed slammed into the radiator, went damn near through it. that cost me 250 through GM because finding a 3.5 engine is damn near impossible ( only came in intrigues for 2 years )
