Dual climate control question

I have a 2002 Grand Prix with the manual Dual climate control ac. The first problem is blower speed #1 does not work. The second problem is the air will not stay cold. The only way I can keep it cold is by wedging something between the two slides when they of course are in the cold position. So it seems to me that the slides are worn out and when ever you put a little pressure on them they work fine. I just hate replacing the entire dual climate control unit if this is not the problem. Anybody ever have any similar issues? It doesn't seem like a blend door because it will always work fine it you keep something jammed between the two slides.

Moved to correct section.
#1 not working is probally the blower motor resistor and it sounds like you need a new control unit. I bet you can find the control unit in a junk yard for about 20 bucks. The resistor is about $50.
