Drive & 3rd Dont engage, 1,2 and Reverse work fine

02 Se model automatic.

the TCC needs changed i have a CEL for that, the speed sensor and the crank sensor.

i was driving it home from work the other day and it kept jumpin and jerkin which i already knew why.
but anyhow i pulled into the driveway and then it wouldnt go forward any further.

i put it in 1st gear and it moved it.

well 1st and 2nd gear the car will move. so will reverse. but when i put it in 3rd or drive it doesnt go nowhere.

now when i put it in park and pull it through the gears the transmission will engage but when i go from Neutral to Drive. the transmission wont even ingage. or 3rd for that matter. it acts like it is still in neutral.

what can this be causing this?

there is no burning or hot smell that comes from anywhere.
i havent checked the fluid level since it did this last night. im fixing to in a few

i already figured i would need a new transmission but if i can get around having to that would be great.

i got all the sensors that i need to fix the car, but with work i just dont have any time to do nothing and i dont have money to let a shop do it.

Yep you probably have a broken Forward apply band and I see this pretty often on 00-02 models. This can be checked by dropping the lower trans pan and looking in a windowed out section in the case just to the passanger side of where the filter is. There is an apply pin that engages the Forward apply band and right where the pin makes contact is where the band will crack or break off, so you may either find a broken piece in the pan or look up and see cracks in the area. Unfortunately this means a full rebuild as the band is one of the last parts to come out of the trans.

damn, i figured. is it at all possible it could be the solenoid or a sensor?
because the transmission has just been rebuilt.

i bought this car off the guy i work with, he is a 70 year old man and he bought the car originally for his grand daughter. and had the transmission repaired. paid $1400 bucks for it.

could the tcc make this do what its doing?
maybe the 1-2 shift solenoid?

i have no problem getting a new transmission, but its hard to find one around here for a reasonable price. so im hoping its not as major as it seems.

Once you confirm it...check out car-part.com

Prices are usually right and you can choose your area. Down side is the upgrades and hardened parts won't be in a low cost JY trans usually.

alright, i just checked and to my suprise there is a transmission right under my nose.
$450. little more than i was hoping to pay, but not a bad price either way. thanks fellas, i appreciate it, this is my first pontiac and i love the car. just gotta get past this crap

hey guys, great info but sad. I experienced this exact problem this morning on my way to work. I was hoping it was maybe a loose connection to one of the solenoids, but that doesn't look very likely from what you have said. Did you confirm this was the fault on your transmission or just changed the whole thing out?

Oh and one more question for you gurus. How long will it work this way? Sure would be nice to get home with the stupid thing, pretty much all in town driving so gear 2 would be fine.

I don't know of any problems that it would cause driving like that for a bit. In fact, once it gets to the point it would normally shift into third, you can move the gear selector into "D" and it may shift to third just fine.

Well you can drive it home like that, you just put it into "1" and once its time, shift to "2" then you can put it in "D". The 2nd manual band is applied when you put in manual range, so thats why you can actually get the tranny to work.

thank you so much for the feedback guys. So it could last a little while like this then? i would love to get a week out of it to find a new vehicle. I did try the manual shift trick after it happened this morning and it did work, just figured i got lucky. But if there is no major issue running it this way i will.

Well just be easy on it for the week then, but keep in mind the manual 2nd band is considerably smaller than the forward drive band, so it doesnt have the same holding power.

well, now all i have is reverse. lol i called a shop and they said they want to hook it to a computer first and see what it reads. said hed do it for free. so its worth a shot before i start rippin it out.i appreciate the info guys..
what other cars share this transmission? year make model? cause i been calling junkyards tryin to find cheapest transmission and i was gonna see if i cant ask for other vehicles
