Does low Freon shut off the compressor?

Hey guys it's getting time to fix the a/c before summer. Maybe 6 months ago I replaced the whole system and It worked great for a few months then randomly only blows hot air. I've heard some vehicles compressor won't turn on if there's low Freon in the system. Because my compressor does turn on but no cold. I'm assuming I just have a leak (probably under the stupid brake booster) but would like peoples opinions. Thanks

Yes, there's a low and high cutoff switch that if the pressure in the system goes too high or low the compressor will not run.
 
If air got into the system couldn't the pressure still read high even If it was low on Freon?
