Diff between 6th and 7th gen dual exhausts?

What are the differences between the dual exhausts on 97-03 and 04-08 Grand Prixs?

I thought they were the same, but they're not, at least not 100%. The midpipe seems the follow the same path, but the muffler inlet size is different, according to Walker.

A Walker muffler for 97-03 has a 1.875" inlet and a 2.25" outlet. For the 04-08 it's 2" in and out, but also has a tip attached. (Looks like just a basic tip, not polished or anything.)

The body dimensions are the same for both. So only the inlet/outlet is different. Anybody know if these are essentially the same, or if one would be quieter enough to matter? Probably not, but I'm asking if anybody has experience with both.

So if the inlet size is different, then maybe the midpipe is different? Branches from 2.5" to 1.875" for 6th gen vs 2.5" to 2" on the 7th? Or maybe the reduction to 1.875" is only at the muffler for the 6th gen?

Any other differences that might be significant?

I need a new exhaust for my '01 GTP (right muffler nearly shot and left probably close behind) and am looking into all my options. Quieter is better so want the Walker Quiet Flow SS. Just don't know if it matters between the 6th/7th mufflers.

I can get outside with a measuring tape and caliper this weekend but at the moment am still busy with family holiday stuff, and I don't want to miss any Black Friday sales on parts I need.

Pretty much what you're already found out is the only differences.

The body mounted hanger spots might be slightly different between the generations though.

The pipe size is still going be that 2.25 inside diameter and the downsize at the muffler makes no difference flow wise. Seems best to just purcchase the whole walker system that fits your vehicle. I'd suggest cleaning the exhaust system prior to installing it and painting it will a high temp exhaust paint to seal it up. That 15-20 bucks for a few cans of exhaust paint can make that stuff last longer and prevent rust.
