DIC Tranny Temp Reading

In a few other threads I mentioned how my DIC Tranny Temp was registering over 250 degrees when driving for long periods on the highway!

I took it to my mechanic to put a tranny cooler on it and he did some driving to observe the temp reading. The fluid looked great and he thought it was unusual how fast the temp seemed to rise.

When he got back to the garage he put a thermal gun on the tranny hose to see what reading came up - the reading was 159 degrees but the DIC said 201.

After the car cooled down his thermal reading and the DIC were about 5 degrees off which could be normal, but the 'hotter' the DIC got the bigger the disconnect with the thermal reading.

The engine never got hot and the fans only kicked in once during his test which cooled things off 15 degrees before turning off so all those temps seem normal.

He went ahead with the tranny cooler as cheap insurance but has anyone seen this kind of disconnect with the DIC reading?

250 sounds pretty high. Get a scan gauge of some kind. My AutoTap will show trans temps and it's only a couple degrees off, small enough that I trust the DIC reading.

Not to knock your mechanic, but a thermal gun is not a helpful tool in this scenario. Unless this is a special thermal gun that I'm unaware of, it only takes the surface temperature of a material. A tranny hose (assuming rubber) would not transfer the fluid heat to the outside of the hose very well at all. Even trying to take a reading off of metal object will not give you an accurate fluid temperature.

Do you have the tranny cooler connected to the radiator? If so, you'll stay fairly close to your engine temperature anyway. The radiator will heat or cool the fluid closer to your engine coolant temperature.

After the tranny cooler was installed the temp is not progressing above 205 on the DIC. My mechanic figured the thermal gun wouldnt be exact but thought it should be close enough.

Anyhow - I think IM good for the long run, just wanted some thoughts on whether or not anyone has seen a DIC Tranny temp not be correct but seems like it most likely was.

Oh I did a fluid change as well with the cooler install just to be safe - but the previous fluid looked pretty in pink :)
