Daughter lost last key...Dealership?

03 gtp...Hey folks, my daughters last key and fob were lost the other day (magically). I do still have a key that works on the door and ignition, but it won't start the car...comes up with security light on the dash and won't start.
I found a cheap place to get the key sets on e-bay. I know how to program the fobs.

Question: Will the car program a blank that's cut right, or am I in it for 400+?

Thanks so much.

Yes I believe you have the PK3 system in your vehicle so you have to get the key from the dealership. I don't think it's 400 bucks though. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Maybe $40-100.

Car will program blank that is cut correctly granted it IS a PK3 compatible key and you still have one programmed key.

But it looks like you don't have any programmed keys left, so its off to GM you go.

Just joined to help you out had same problem. If you have a key that is cut to the ignition, then order two of the keys off ebay, comes in a pair for like 13 bux, and yes they are the gm microchiped keys. Just key in 2003 Pontiac grand prix key and they will pop up. Once they come have them cut to the one key that you said is for the ignition, and they will come with instructions to program them to the computer and will erase all keys that were in there prior. It does 32 minutes to do the program but well worth it....... But if you say you have a key already cut just try and program that one to the computer.

There is a "possible" way to do it yourself, I have seen it fail more times and it has succeeded.

If it fails to do it, you HAVE to tow the car to a dealership, the keys if you have them cut will run $30-40 per key, and it will cost roughly an hour labor. The tech has to hook up the car and put the car into learning mode to learn a new key, thus the reason a un-programmed blank won't work.

Gimme a sec and I will find the info on how to try it yourself.

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Geneva]There were some posts in the automotive forums recently asking about how to program a PassKey-III (PK3) replacement key.
After a bit of research, I have the following to offer:
Disclaimer: I have NOT personally tried these procedures, but have been told that they work on various GM vehicles.
First of all, the key looks like this:
pass-Key-3-pic.jpg
(note the black plastic cover). You should also see "PK3" stamped in the metal just below the plastic cover. This key has a "transponder" in it that is used to enable the ignition and fuel systems. Without a properly programmed key (or system programmed to accept the key), the van will not start or stay running.

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Geneva]From the service manual:
There are actually two procedures, but one involves using a programming tool which only dealers would have access to, so I am going to leave that one out.
30 Minute Relearn Procedure (Steps): This is for a "replacement" (new) key (no original available)

1) Insert a "Master" Passkey III (PK3) Key (the one with the black plastic cover as shown above).
2) Turn the Ignition to ON, but do NOT start the engine. You should see the "Security" message on the dash for about 10 minutes and then it will turn off.
3) Turn OFF the Ignition and wait 5 seconds.
4) Repeat the above steps (1-3) a total of 3 times, or a total of 30 minutes.
5) After the third time (including turning back to the OFF position), start the van. The van should now have "learned" the transponder information and will allow it to start and continue to run.
Important Notes:
- When the above procedure is used, all previously learned keys will be erased from system memory.
- Additional keys can be learned immediately after the relearn procedure. This is done by inserting the additional key and turning the ignition to the RUN position within 10 seconds of removing the previously learned key

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Geneva]From another source (that provides PK3 keys): This is used to add a "duplicate" key (have original)
1) Insert the "Original" (working) Key.
2) Turn the Ignition to ON (RUN), but do NOT start the engine. Turn the Ignition OFF and remove the key.
3) Within 15 seconds insert the new "duplicate" key and turn the Ignition to the ON position. The Security indicator should light for about 2 seconds to indicate that the new key has been programmed.
4) The new key should now be able to start and run the van.
Notes:
- The manual seems to confirm this procedure except that the new key should be inserted and turned to ON (RUN) within 10 seconds.

I didnt have a single programmed key to the gtp i just bought last wk security light would flash with the only key it came with. And the keys off of ebay or PK3 keys, i know i just got them in the mail about 5 days ago and once i had them cut and i programmed them the security light shut off, and haven't had a problem

I bought this car off ebay at a discount. It was a crappy little dealership that didn't advertise the fact that it was a rebuilt title and had been stolen and apparently put in the ditch at one point, then restored.
I know this because the key for the car doesn't open the rear pass through and the rear stabilizer bar was bent.
I bought it in 2004 for 11,5K and it now has 190K on it. Still got a good deal.

Thanks all for the information, this forum has saved my ass so many times. I'll post back once we receive the keys here in the next day or so.
