CV Axle question

firstly all i found was the how to before people tell me google/search
http://www.grandprixforums.net/cv_shaft_replacement.php

ok with that being said i bought a new cv from napa took everything apart and put the new one in. went to put it in reverse and i got a grinding noise so i immediately shut the car off. now i took it apart again and there is play on the end where the cv goes into the tranny. my question is that there is a shaft that is supposed to come out from the tranny as its own piece. it did not come out of the tranny when i took the old one off so i left it in place and put the new one on it. i fear that that shaft is what is worn out, is this possible to replace??? i cannot for the life of me get the cv any farther onto the shaft and there is still play on that end. any ideas??? never had a cv with two pieces so this is new and im afraid i replaced a cv when the it was that stupid shaft. also that tutorial said no tranny fluid should come out but like a half a cup came out.

im kinda freaking out because we are leaving for a long trip monday night and was supposed have finished this yesterday as i didnt think it was a good idea to drive 16hrs with shake in the steering wheel (mostly under braking and fast acceleration/highway speed)

I'm not sure if I'm following correctly, but what I got out of reading that is maybe you didn't pop the axle back in all the way when you were installing..The rings on the end need to be pushed in sort of hard so they compress and then snap in..You should hear a little click when it goes in

well thats what i was thinking, and the reason i took it apart today. but it seems as though it has the same play the old one had when it was all bolted together. ive only done a few cvs before and never had one where the splines come off both the tranny and the axle. is there a better way to get the cv in aside from beating the end with a hammer? i just dont know if anybody has had a problem with that specific piece

problem: wrong cv for car
solution: get the right one :th_eyesrolling:

the cv was a smaller diameter, hence the extra play i was feeling at the tranny

good call. why did they give you the wrong axle?

well im not sure what you asking.... the part in the box was wrong lol i was going to buy a cheapo reman but they didnt have it in stock so he gave me the new one at a discounted price. i dont think they knew it was wrong and i certainly didnt realize it was diff either (stupid me i checked length but not diameter) either the part got mixed or they grabbed the wrong one off the shelf.
