Custom Halo's in non-projector headlights?

So, here is what I am thinking. I have very little money, but I would really love to have some halo's on my headlamps. I am pretty good with my hands and know I could fabricate my own custom sets (two per lamp). Here is my question/dilemma, in the day i am sure my custom halos would look great, but at night, with the headlights on and having HID's (and having no projectors since i am using the same stock headlights) would they look like crap? Would you even be able to see the halos over the HID headlight glow? Also, would this effect light output on the road?
Anyone ever done this or have any thoughts about how I could make this work, let me know
 


would look like shyt IMO.....buy some used projectors if you want halos. halos and no proj. looks rice. plus you will have a funny looking out put do to putting shyt in the way of the HL beam
