Cruise dosen't work?

Hey all. Brand new GP owner here. I just picked up my 2002 GTP and I absolutely love it! The only complaint I have is that the cruise doesn't work on the car. Also, under boost the car seems to cut out or skip. Kinda like a misfire. From what I've read the misfire should be fixable with either plugs or wires or maybe a coil pack. Anywho, what should I be looking at to fix the cruise? Is there a sensor somewhere that could have gone bad? All help is appreciated! :th_winking:

Welcome to the community.

One of the weird things Ive seen that causes the cruise to stop working is if the third tail light bulb goes out. Check that and see if its working. If thats good, start with the fuses. I cant recall right now if the cruise is vacuum operated or not, but that may be another thing to look at.

First, I'd check fuses and tail lights. Belaive it or not, if you have a burnt out tail light, cruise will not work. Then relays. As for the sputter, I'd do plugs and wires first and if that doesn't solve the problem, move on to the coil packs. When mine did that, I had the dealer scan mine and found out my 3,6 pack was gone. Hope this helps some.

You beat me to it Scotty. Me must have been typing it up at the same time. Your just a little faster.lol!!!

Probably something to do with how the wiring of the center tail lights is relative to the brake switch (which the cruise module monitors).

Awesome! Thanks for all the help guys! I actually know for a fact that the third brake light is out I just didn't imagine that would be in any way related. haha Also thanks for the welcome, I'm def. looking forward to doing some hardcore lurking :th_king-evil:

Hey man, nice choice on the GTP.

I would suggest doing a nice tune up to the car.

Change your oil, Clean the intake manifold(carb and choke cleaner), Change your spark plugs, and run some seafoam on it.

And I also demand that you put your first mod on the car as soon as possible.

And the mod is:

Make a cold air intake!

Heres a few pics to give you an idea:

Good luck!

Well I went ahead and replaced both third brake light bulbs as they were both burned out but cruise still no worky. Does it need to reset itself? I checked and all the other bulbs are working fine so I'm not sure what to do next. Also, I had the car scanned and it showed a #5 cylinder misfire so I guess I found my problem there! As always all help is appreciated!

well the fuse looked fine, I changed though just to be safe but it still doesn't seem to work. :-/ frustrating but oh well!

Next thing I would check would be the linkage from the cruise control box to the throttle body and make sure it hasn't come unhooked. We'll take it step by step to see if we can get it figured out.

I was also thinking about maybe checking the brake light switch in the car. Maybe it is failing? Where should I be looking for the linkage? I will probably pick this up again tomorrow since it is dark and chilly out haha

Also, not saying you don't know what your doing, but how are you setting the cruise? I know it took me a couple times to get it right because one other car I drove had the same switch, but set different. When you look under the hood at the drivers side strut tower, you'll see a black box sitting on top. That's your cruise control. There will be a cable running from there to the TB.

Yeah the brake lights are all working but I thought maybe it wasn't fully disengaging and that would be why the cruise didn't work. And as far as setting the cruise I just slide the button on the stalk to the middle then press the button on the end of the stalk just like all the other gms :th_tongue2: haha

FOUND IT!! The cable running from the control box to the throttle body is in fact not connected. It's to dark to see why or to put it back together but at least I know what's up now. Thanks for all the help man. haha, I even went out and read the tiny little letters on the stalk thinking I was turning my cruise on wrong :th_lipssealed2:
