cruise control not working.

Today i was driving on the highway and i tried to put on cruise control, but it simply didn't work. There are no lights on or messages on the display. I've done a little reading online and found out that sometimes it has to do with the brakes. That would make sense because i did slam the brakes on really hard a few days ago. But am not sure if thats even the problem. Does anyone know what steps i should take to troubleshoot?
 


Not the brakes them selves but the electrical parts of the brake system.

Either you have a 3rd brake light out, the brake switch under the dash is faulty or you have a problem with the multi-function switch and or the cruise control box under the hood.
 
ok well all 3 lights illuminate when applying the brakes. does that mean I can rule out the brake switch under the dash as well as the 3rd light being out?
