Crack in Transmission

I have been getting a small puddle under my car for a couple days, and after some searching, I finally figured out it was coming from a small crack/dent in my tranny. The leak is pretty slow, but a leak nonetheless. I took a picture from beneath the car today, and I included one from when the tranny was not in the car. (The tranny is securely inside the car now.)

The question is: How to repair it (while still in the car)?

I read about a few people using JB Weld to repair cracks, but I'm not sure how permanent that would ultimately be. I guess what I would prefer is to weld it for real - if I can. I'm sure I'll have to drop the pan and drain all the fluid regardless, but I am worried about (aside from trying to reach the crack) the heat from welding and whether or not there may be something on the inside of the case wall that could be damaged by the heat.

Anyone have any experience on crack repairs? Or any idea what is on the inside of the case at this location of the crack? Any other suggestions??

i'd try some Jb weld on it, clean it up real good, sand the area, and smear it on, let it cure, and wait and see.
 
it would take some pretty good heat for a good penetrating weld. Something like that may even have to be preheated. I would stick with JB weld.
 
I know this thread is 2 years old, but in case anyone else reads this I wanted to say that the JB Weld worked amazing to fix this crack.

(I drained the fluid completely, cleaned the area, sanded it, filled the hole with a bit of JB weld and followed it up with a thin layer after the first round cured completely to make sure I didn't miss anything.) I've had zero problems with it for 2 years and I would expect the same for years to come (but I won't be able to verify that because someone totaled my parked car). Thanks for the help!

Right, sorry! Definitely from outside of the car. Local shops wanted $1800-$2000 to rebuild mine, so I just got one from the junkyard. I took pics to match up the numbers at the junkyard before I took it home. It wasn't filled up with fluid when got it and so I didn't notice the dent/leak until after it was already installed in my car (and working great!). When I realized where the leak was coming from I went back to the pictures I took at the junkyard to make sure the shop didn't do it. I could've taken it back to the junkyard... but for the cost, it was easier to just try and fix it myself.
(It was worth the $1200+ savings) :)
 
There goes my thinking you were somehow an amazing picture taker from underneath the car. Still...you had the picture and that was key.
