Couple Trans cooler questions

Hey guys, I've been doing some research on a trans cooler install on my 01 GTP and I just want to make sure I have a couple questions answered before I do it tomorrow. First, I've heard that I could do it in series with the radiator or as a standalone. Being in Chicago, I've heard that installing it in series is the way to go but some people say otherwise. Opinions on that? With this, do I need to worry about check ball fittings? The cooler I have is a Hayden 679 cooler. I was planning just splicing into the line and flare the ends and using hose clamps. Also, if doing it in series, tap into lines coming out of the radiator? So then it goes trans>radiator>my cooler>trans. Is there anything else I need?

Thanks guys

Chris

If I were in your spot, I'd run the cooler in in series with the radiator. Just like you said; Trans → Radiator → Cooler → Trans.

If you splice into the factory return line rubber section, you won't need to worry about the checkball as long as you maintain the FEED fitting from the trans.

If you use hose clamps, get the best available and double up. Cheap insurance.

Alright thanks, I read your write up but since I'm going in series, it's a little different. I also didn't know there was factory rubber lines so that's good to hear too. Is there anything else I can do in addition to Hose clamps? Aren't these lines pretty low pressure or am I mistaken?

There's rubber sections in the factory lines.

I wouldn't call them low pressure.

an lines and fittings are king. After that, I would say good sharp new barbed fittings with fuel injection hose clamps. Then last would be barb fittings with regular worm gear hose clamps, doubled up. Nothing less than that.

alright, I'll probably do the barbed fittings with the rubber lines with fuel injector hose clamps. Thanks for your help!

Don't be afraid of using hose clamps. Make sure the barb is all the way in, and the clamp is tight over the barbs.

I hope to install a cooler soon, and will be doing it similar to Brandon's, but will connect via the rubber as I posted above.

Have mine installed in series. Never gives me issue. Trans stays under 180 at all times. However, my car is NA and I do not drive it hard.

I tend to drive hard on the interstate. I get bored driving back and forth from Iowa. What size cooler do you use? What temps did you see before?

Running in series's main downfall is when in traffic, that's when the coolant in the radiator is the hottest and it causes the trans to heatsoak even worse, the aftermarket cooler in that setup will be giving off mostly engine heat. It does have potential to cool better with both coolers when there is plenty of airflow though. So in series setups should have tuned fans to keep coolant temps lower since its still cooling the transmission.

I really only see the high temps when I'm coming home from school and back. All interstate driving. Can I just tap off of the radiator with the supplied fitting in my trans kit, then using the rubber from that fitting to go to the cooler and then go back into the line where it's rubber? Just want to make sure with the whole checkball
