Cordless impact wrenches....

Just wondering if anyone uses/has used any lithium ion powered impact wrenches for medium-to-high-torque jobs.

I've been working on getting a front wheel hub assembly off (it put in good service for 248,000 miles, god rest its soul) with different breaker bars, and I can't get the hub bolts to budge. Afraid that I'll round off the bolt heads if I keep effin' with it so I ordered a compact 20v cordless impact wrench rated at about 130 ft/lbs. So, does anybody have experience with these cordless wrenches, and if so, do you think it will yank those bolts out?

That won't be even close to get something loose like those if you can't even get a breaker bar to knock em loose.

You'll need something well into the 400+ range to get really tough bolts/nuts loose.

My Craftsman C3 is rated at like 200 something ft lbs and does all my small stuff very well but certain things it's useless for. My buddy has a matco gun that is rated at 700 ft lbs and that thing is a beast. Snap On makes a good one aswell.

At this point, you should use heat. Grab a torch and heat the bolts up a little, then turn the wheel all the way to lock on one side and get your socket and breaker bar in there, grab a pipe to make it longer and they will pop loose.

You're both probably right, especially considering the luck I've had with this thing so far. I'm still open to hearing some success stories though!

The only reason I even considered that the one I ordered might work was the across the board excellent reviews (Dewalt 883M2). I just hated to spend much more than 200 bucks, but might end up having to go that route. I'll give it a shot when it gets here and see how it does. And thanks for the suggestion to use some heat, sounds like a good plan.

I'd still keep whatever one you bought anyway.

I rarely use my hand tools when working with cars, my impact guns or cordless impacts make any job 10x faster. Of course certain things I can't fit my impacts in there but that's not very often.

several times already, rotating wheels and what not. I really really like it....went with the 1/2" ..can use a 3/8th down adapter for other stuff.

An old Yakima roof cross bar works the best. LOL

I just bought a Craftsman C3 with lithium battery. Haven't used it yet, but it is 200ft/lbs, so will be nice for changing tires and the odd stuck bolt. I do have a good air impact, but no air source to run it at the house. Keep the gun if you like toys. If you need to justify it......"work smarter, not harder". :th_thumb-up:

I probably will. I've got a corded electric impact wrench that will take off just about anything, but it's about as long as my dang forearm so it's useless in a lot of situations. Maybe a combo of that heat you advised and the new impact will do the trick, I'm definitely gonna give it a shot.

I have a 1/2in Ingersol Rand air impact for lugs and tough bolts, and a 1/4in Dewalt battery powered impact for smaller bolts.

What Scotty said, not sure how you could round it off unless you're not seating the 6 point socket all the way in covering the entire nut.

$200 isn't going to buy much. To my knowledge, IR and Milwaukee are at the top of cordless impact wrenches. Each offer a 1/2" impact that will reach 1100lb ft. My air powered IR only gets to about 600lb ft. My next purchase will be the Milwaukee.
