Cooling Question

So I have a 2004 GP GT. Recently did the upper and lower intake gaskets. Also replaced the thermostat with a 180 degree one.

Here is my situation. While driving down the road it sits right around the 180-185 mark. But if I sit idle for a bit it will go up to about 200-210.

Now my question, Is this normal? I have a stock PCM so I know the fans don't kick on till around 200? im not entirely 100% on that. Or could it be that my coolant system was not bled properly?

That' where it should be sitting, the fan turn on points are a bit wacky stock IMO. I think l67ss is right, 210 is the low speed turn on point if I remember correctly. I don't remember what the high speed turn on temp is, maybe 230? Regardless, you're fine.

just put the 195 back in, the 180 is doing nothing good for the engine, or your mpg avg. gm engines want to run at 210 deg's. its where they run the best.

I always assumed thermostats found a point of equilibrium (not fully open or closed) based on engine temp and air temp. If you are driving down the highway for a while and the thermostat has found its balance point of openness, if you slow to a stop your engine is still running but there is no air flow over the radiator to cool your coolant. Then your coolant temp will rise causing the thermostat to open more and bring your engine temp back down.

My coolant temp rises and falls all the time but driving at a steady speed it should get to an appropriate temperature and stay there.
