This morning while i was driving to school, my check engine light came on while i was climbing a very steep hill going 50 mph. now i hear a whining from the side the belt is on and a very faint knocking sound that wasnt there before. i checked the belt and its fine. does anybody have any ideas as to what may have happened??

Maybe low on power steering fliud? Either that or a pulley going bad.

And stop by an Autozone and have the code read and post it here so we don't have to guess at what the issue may really be.

Get the code read first. It's free at about ANY autoparts store. Knocking doesn't sound good to me.

Well! it must not have been a big deal. the light went away and stopped making that noise before i had time to go and get it checked. still wonder what it was tho

The light came back on :( i just went to autozone and had a scan. this is what it said:
P1404

Definition - EGR Valve stuck open condition

Explanation - While monitoring the EGR valve pintle position the ECM detected the closed position sensor voltage higher than the learned closed position voltage

Probable cause - Failed EGR Valve, Carbon blockage of the pintle

i was thinking of seeing if i might be able to clean it out somehow since it says carbon buildup. would that work??

ahh darn. eh well 20 is wayyy better than spending the 150 they were asking for a bran new one. and from my understanding it seems easy to install myself. how would i buy it from you?

well first id have to dig through my parts closet and find it... then hopefully u have a pay pal acct. send me 20 and a few bucks for shipping. then i mail it to u. ;) voila u have a good EGR lol

i went and took the egr off and cleaned it out with carb cleaner and let it sit for the day. put it back on let the car warm up and drove for about ten minutes. when i was in park i noticed that it idles lower now?? between 1 or 2 notches below 1000 rpm is that normal?

oh good :] since i got the car it had been idling at 1000. it just seemed that now at 800 it ran a little rougher than before but its not very noticeable
