cheap solution to s/c rotor coating

I recently was given a gen v but 75% of the rotor coating was worn off and I was told some metal shavings from the blown engine was pulled threw and scared the bores so I looked at all my options for re coating the rotors with apc you can't buy this stuff without being a part of the powder coating industry I was told so buying it and having it done locally was out of the question but there are a few companies that will do it the cheapest price I found was $150.00 plus shipping costs and they wouldn't guaranty the bearings after pressing them on and off the plate at that price and risk you can find used gen v with 100k for $150.00 shipped so what's the point now there is powder coat epoxy but you need to remove the rotors from the plate to have it coated and I did not want to go that route or risk hard chunks peeling off and ending up in the engine so what I found was vht epoxy spray paint rated for 250° for use with undercarriage parts and tools I lightly sand blasted the rotors clean and painted the rotors as a assembly with light multiple coats between each coat I turned the rotors while I was painting them and made sure it was even coats while it was drying under a heat lamp I had the silencer ports welded shut I was going to add a few coats of high temp 2000° ceramic paint after the 7 days to fully cure but the paint was just thick enough to help fill the gap there was some drag from the epoxy and in one area. there is a high spot after forcing it to turn with a screw driver over the same spot multiple times I found the epoxy perfectly wearing into the case it did not chip just very light scuff markings even after putting a high power drill to turn the shaft it looks to be very durable after 3,000 miles I am going to install a video scope to inspect the rotors I'll let you guys know how it turned out

That thing gets a helluva lot hotter than that!
Sooner or later it's not going to be pretty...

I wouldn't be using this "free" gen v unless you replace the rotors

I give you credit for giving something a try and being willing to share with the community. Kudos to you sir, let us know the results.
 


As long as it seals right? I had an old gen3 with no coating left that I received for free. Same idea as you. Only issue was, would the paint wear like the coating does ex: the paint may flake or chip vs the actual coating will wear into the casing and make a perfect seal.
 
From what I seen so far it doesn't look like it is going to chip after turning it multiple times what I have found is ground up epoxy when I painted my ported gen 3 I got overspray on the inside of the case and after 2years it's still there
 
Well hey I'm all for it the test/research. Let us know how it turns out after a few thousand miles or more.
Im sure we all had that idea cross our mind at one point but necer actually tried it ! You're the first I know of that posted it
 
The compressed air might reach 300° but the case and rotors won't especially with a intercooler you would need to be at full boost for a few minutes for the case and rotors to raise in temp that high

A small piece of sheet metal over a stove would heat up instantly but a large piece like the rotors would take a while
