Id like to first start out by saying the talent and experience here has literally saved me and probably others thousand$.
My cat is plugged cuz I cant get over 3k rpms in any gear, from a stop I need to take very slowly or itl bang into gear and when I have too wot it smells like rotten eggs. The question i have is I was told by two reputable dealers that if I dont change both oxygen sensors that my cat will suffer the same fate. I dont have a cel and at the prices w the cat I cant afford it but cant afford to buy anything twice. Any ideas?? 08 w dual exhaust.
 


No I dont hv emissions here but id rather keep things stock. Both sensors are over 225 $ and just wondering if I really need them w no cel.
 
It'd be cheaper than to ditch the cat then to replace everything. I mean you can't even drive your car normal...

O2 sensors on RockAuto are $40 each so you're getting ripped off at this mechanic place.

They dealers are just trying to make you spend more money. The post cat o2 does nothing but monitor that the cat is functioning so you could put a known bad o2 in there and it wouldn't affect your cat or even the way the car runs. You'd just have a CEL.

The main o2 does affect AFR, but if it's functioning properly it's not going to harm your cat.

My opinion, get a zzp downpipe and put it in yourself.

No SES light when the sensor is "removed" from the exhaust stream using spacers aka spark plug non- foulers

Thanks for the reply. Thats a nice ride stealthee, I want that hood:). Im in canada so the prices are alot higher and I wouldn't wanna put any other brand but ac delco. I think I hv ocd when it comes to that thing lol. The fuel economy is ridiculous right now. To the tune of 10km/L.
 
Yeah I recently replaced both sensors (AC Delco) and a Walker catalytic converter for less than $225 I think, check Amazon too they have free shipping when your over a certain amount. I would replace both sensors too as I believe it's recommended when replacing the cat
 


swapped out the front O2 sensor as I wasn't getting great gas mileage. Popped a P0420 which is a cat code. Figured it might be a rear O2 sensor as the PCM measures the difference from the front and rear O2 sensors which gives you the cat code. After replacing the rear O2 code came back. Went to the dealership to make sure it was in fact a bad cat code, as a number of other issues can pop this code. Had the cat code confirmed and ordered a downpipe with the cat. Took it to an exhaust muffler place which charged me $65 to install it. Most places I believe don't charge too much as they get $100 or so for the old cat, maybe more.
 
I ordered my cat itl b in tomorrow. I think I may change the front sensor next pay in two weeks. Hope il be okay. I took apart the intake today and cleaned everything including maf and egr with qtips. Problem is when I took off the iac off the plenum it reaked of gas. Like a very strong odor, is this normal for a pooched cat? I just dont want there being another problem That I cant afford lol.
 
A 2008 car doesnt have a IAC (idle air control valve), that's part of the electronic throttle body now.

So what did you take off?

And how could something so far upstream of the exhaust and cat converter make the cat being bad any different?
 
Lol my bad.... throttle body. I clean it twice a year but its never smelled that bad. I know extra fuel being burned dont help things for my issue. Hopefully the fuel economy will return w a new cat. Gonna pick it up today:)
