Cat-Back on 2005 GP GT

I'm looking to put a cat-back system on my grand prix by next summer (as soon as i get the money). I've been looking at Dynomax's with their ultraflo mufflers, magnaflow's, slp's. I'm having difficulty deciding what to go for since dynomax's r aroudn 300 bucks cheaper than magnaflow's and slp is right in the middle. i thought at first the dynomax ones were not stainless steel making them cheaper but they are stainless steel. i think i can throw slp out of the mix because they don't produce the sound I'm looking for. I'd like the sound to be a deep rumble. And also i want the system to pass emissions (I'm in connecticut if that matters) so I don't have to take it off and put the stock back on just for emission tests. So can I have your thoughts on what I should go for? Is magnaflow really worth the extra 300 bucks compared to dynomax?

well for exhaust u should just get mufflers and new tips or stick to stock mufflers and new tips and just buy SSAC headers for 200 bucks, catbacks dont gain to much at all, especially for the amount of money ull spend on em, as for mufflers (i got SLP) and they sound pretty nice, borla is also a good set, magnaflow droney and so are flowmasters

I don't want to destroy the factory exhaust system though. A cat back bolts on so I could take that off much easier if I had to take it off rather than if I got new mufflers and tips and had them welded on. If I had emission problems from just new mufflers that would be a pain to get them cut off, have the stock ones welded back on, and then taking those off again and putting the new ones back on. I'm going with the cat back and I'll do the headers eventually.

Why would mufflers cause an emission problem?

We have 1 cat converter, its the ONLY emissions part of the exhaust system.

Personally I'd do what was said above.

But its your money and not mine.

Also one thing to note, if you have done any research about the 3800's exhaust, aftermarket mufflers will sound like crap unless you buy certain mufflers.

Flowmasters and magnaflows tend to drone and be raspy, dynomax is so so (havent heard many) and borla is pretty okay sounding from what I hear.

the big thing is im not the one doing the work my dad does the stuff and he refuses to destroy any factory parts so thats why the cat back is the way im going. i'd rather go the cheaper route that slpgpgt suggested and get more from it but i only have so much control over it since my dad does most of the work

oh but i could buy a stock exhaust from a parts yard and modify that with the mufflers and tips and then do headers. maybe thats what ill do

yeah all i would get is from the cat to the end from the yard. idc if i chop that one up because ill still have my factory exhaust in tact

i think i know you OP.........PM me when ya get this.
exhaust systems sound like ass on our cars. theres a reason flowmasters are called dronemasters. borla IMO is the best sound you can get out of these 3.8's, the system itself is really pricey though. it shouldnt cost as much with just borla muffs, and i know your dad doesnt wanna chop up a factory exhaust system but really, its taking old muffs off and welding new ones in place. no chopping of exhaust system required.
