Car makes humming noise when driving

I was driving my 07 Grand Prix earlier today. It had been raining out and I took a corner a little too fast. My brakes locked up and I ended up hitting the curb pretty hard but avoided hitting anything else (luckily).

I left for work later and noticed that when I approach the 20mph mark, the car makes a very loud humming noise. Once I got on the highway and was going about 65, the noise quieted down considerably. And the noise stops completely when the car is stopped.

Did I knock something loose when I hit the curb earlier? Is it a serious problem?

Thanks for any help that you folks can give me.

chances are you killed the wheel bearing/hub assembly.

also make sure your lower control arm is not bent, and tie rod are still good. <<<this would be the first place to look if your steering wheel is no longer straight.

I'm supposed to go out of town after my shift at work today. Is it safe to drive for a day or two or is this the kind of thing that should be repaired ASAP?

If this was due to normal wear and tear, you might be able to get away with it for a while before any of those parts get bad enough that they'd completely break on you/leave your vehicle inoperable. However, since this happened due to impact, I would definitely get it looked at to see how bad the damage is before making a long trip or driving 65mph again. You do NOT want a tie rod letting loose on you at those speeds.

if you can hear it, it should be fixed. i just did one on my car yesterday, took a whole 45 minutes to do. nothing real hard about it, if you can change your brakes you can change a hub. i say that because the brakes need to come off, completely off.
