Car dies upon starting

So I bought a 2004 Grand Prix GTP Comp G a month ago and every time I start it, it dies. But when I start it, I can give it a little rev and it will run just fine. Anyone know why it does that? Right now, it's in the shop getting the tranny replaced but it was replaced 3 days prior to me buying but the tranny slipped and kicked out of gear every time I drove it. But can anyone help with the starting issue?

I agree with Scotty, sounds like a dirty throttle body. Had the same problem with the 06 I'm daily driving when I purchased it.

its simple to clean, take it off, spray the back side where all the carbon is with carb cleaner and wipe off with a rag. clean the flap the sides of the flap and the walls till they all shine.

call that trans shop and have them install a shift kit while they are back in there. they make the trans last longer if your beating the snot out of it.

faster firmer shifts = less clutch wear. where stock those soft mushy shifts are burning the clutches.

you can get a shift kit for like 40 bucks on e bay. its easy to install if the shop cant get one.

The tranny was under warranty so everything is being done free. Do you have link on how to install a shift kit? Because they are just replacing the tranny. Do I have to pull the tranny apart to install one or what?

So I just called the shop today to see about when I'll have my car back. they have had it for a week and they told me they can not find a transmission for it. The previous owner had a mechanic do the replacement so they can't just rebuild the one that's in it. I'm getting so mad!
