so im looking at getting a remanufactured motor tomorrow from rock auto. im choosing this route because of the warranties that come with it. but there are two options available with about a 200 dollar difference. when i called in they said it was because there was a mid year change to the car. can someone explain to me exactly what the change was and how i can tell which motor is applicable to me?

IIRC 97's had a mid year change for the tranny on the SE n gt. They went from vac assisted 4t60e to the electrical 4t65e. So maybe the motor difference has something to do with the vac routing????

i know i have the later one and thats why im asking. its an extra 200 bucks for that motor. to my understanding, nothing had actually changed as far as the motor itself. its just a long block im buying. so i was hoping i could just get the one thats cheaper and if at all possible but i do not know the difference between the two and the guy at rock auto was not able to tell me the difference either

and there is no vin # to match up. i put in the information asking what model car i have and both motors populated. so id imagine boht would work fine i just wanted to make sure

i think its more trans related than engine, but im totally not sure if it matters one way or the other.

and i just looked at their page, idk what to make of it.

ya neither does rock auto lol. i talked to the guy from customer service and asked him the difference and what he told me was "uuuuuummmmm idk let me see..... looks like there was a mid year change with the vechile." i continued to asked what had changed and he said he had no idea haha

The only thing I am aware of that would effect the long block is the heads. Early heads supposedly were more prone to cracking. However...it seems like all heads are prone to cracking between the valves. As far as installation goes..there's no worries that I'm aware of that should make you buy one vs the other.

Some have had difficulty installing 90lb springs on the earlier 97 heads.

I was going to say you could always check the Manufactures date on the door. Typically, if it's an early model it will be June or earlier. Doesn't matter though since you ordered it already. Keep us posted how it goes.
