Can a 16 year old work at a Car Dealership?

I just turned 16 and am going to need to find a job to buy my car and mods :th_biggrin2: I was just thinking of some jobs that would actually keep me somewhat entertained instead of handing someone their cheeseburgers over a counter. One thing I thought of was at a car dealership. Now I know going in that I couldn't become a Saleman until I was 18 but before that I thought of a sort of "Lot Boy" as in I would park the new or used cars, wash, detail them. My question I guess was does anyone know if this is possible? Maybe even if you live in the Columbus Ohio area and have had experience with this? I just would like to know because I could totally see my self getting fired from a normal job where as at a dealership I would be totally entertained and WANT to work and do my best. Thanks!

Not sure about being a porter at 16, kind of a big liability for the dealership. Your best bet would probably be to apply to wash/detail the cars.

the detailer's need to drive the cars, new/used, that being said their insurance may not cover it. cant hurt to ask tho, you never know what they may or may not have for you.

sweeping the floors is as ground floor as it gets.

a used car lot maybe a better shot. i see them wash them right where they sit here by me.

Basically my guess is that they could use you to wash/ detail the cars on the lot. If you are good enough you may get to deep clean the trade ins. It seems to me that there really isn't a whole lot you can really do without being 18 for safety/ liability reasons. I worked fast food and it was alright. I loved working with my coworkers and making food was okay but since Im not one of those OMG FOOD!! people it wasn't that exciting. If you could get into a dealership that would be pretty awesome. It helps to know people too. Ask around to see if anyone you know may have connections to help you get in or see if you could even work there. Like said before worst thing that they can say is no.

I like the car wash idea that Neil mentioned.

We have a Green Lantern/Blue Beacon wash around here...the big truck wash obviously starts you off at more money due to the fact it's harder work...but most of my buddy's back in high school worked at a GL.

No luck yet... I got one "We're actually looking to expand, we'll give you a call later" but i'm not getting my hopes up

I would definitely call around and ask the smaller dealerships. One of my good friends(he's 17) works at our local used car lot and he does more stuff than you'd think. Obviously he washes and details them but all of that takes time so you would always have something to do. Some of the other stuff he does is mow around their lots, cleans the windows for their showroom thing that "showcases" some cars, etc. I'm sure they'd have a lot for you to do.

Yup most dealers will like you to be 18+ for insurance purposes. Flipping burgers isn't that bad as first job especially when you start seeing those paycheck a coming in.. Don't be so opposed to it after all your own 16 so there's not much you can do.

^^That.

I got a job at 11 throwing papers...did that until I was 14~, then got a job working at a local pizza place. Did that for 5~ years...worked my way up to management...and got into banking on a whim. Been doing that ever since.

I worked at Wendy's for 3 years and still never got tired of the place :( but I don't eat it much since the one down the road I worked at and once I leave a job I don't make it a point to come eat there will however go to one when I'm in the next town.

So besides the Pizza lmao. I'm kind of confused, Dealerships wouldn't hire me because of insurance liability on their cars? I know my parents and I have pretty good insurance so couldn't they cover it?

not the same. when you work somewhere your covered by their insurance while at work.

just like deli work, they wont let you use a slicing machine till your 18.

at least you want a job lol kids today are lazy........ to bad your stuck waiting 2 more years for the world to open up some for ya.

Edit: its more a work mans comp deal then their insurance. they set the rules really.

Yup something happens and you hurt yourself or damage a car or property or something that's when that comes into play. Most of the time they want some ones that's 21+

I'm just gonna call around and see if maybe the need someone to do like upkeep of the dealership, mow etc. at least i'll be able to see the cars lmao :LOOOL:
