Bypassing your a/c with a shorter belt?

I have a 98 GTP, the A/C clutch is locked up and grinding, it doesn't disengage when I turn off my A/C. Looking at it, it looks like I could just get a shorter belt and bypass the A/c completely. Does anyone know of any reasons why this wouldn't work? I don't care about the air and want to just keep the car running for cheap.

It won't easily work, if you don't want to replace the compressor then just put an ac delete pulley on it

Damn appreciate it, I saw the a/c delete pulleys but couldn't find any good resources on installing it, my neighbor told me it requires a lift and a special tool to remove/install the pulley.

But I see people talking about it like its relatively simple

You remove the A/C compressor and bolt the delete pulley in the same spot..

if you take the coil bracke t off you got a clear shot to the 2 bolts that hold the bracket and ac on, then the back side is a bracket that needs to come off, jack stands, car ramps, either work, then crack the ac lines off the compressor and let it fly, not recommended, best to have a shop vac it out, this way they can recharge the system with it later on, of course they would charge for this.

you can also change the clutch with the compressor still on the engine, working through the wheel well with the splash guard and tire removed. its right there. you loose no freon changing the clutch either, you need a special puller but it can be bought for 10 or 20 bucks then have at it.

This. I did it and had never worked an a/c anything before.

Thanks for the help guys, got an A/C Delete, and was able to get it put on in a few hours. Going in through the wheel well was the best advice, made it pretty easy.

My car sounds great now and she lives to drive another day!
