Blown Tranny? GTP Cruising @50mph

Boosted02GTP

2002 GTP with 129,000K. It never missed a beat. I gave it fresh fluid 5,000 miles ago, even the old fluid looked new! No rough shifts, no slipping, no clunks, noises ect. I was cruising ~50mph and it was like someone knocked it into N. The rpms went up and nothing. No noise, not a thing. Pulled over and it was like the car was stuck in N, I had no reverse, D, 3, 2, 1. Nothing. I don't get it.

I dropped it off at the local transmission shop. They said they would look at it in the morning. I replaced both CV shafts not that long ago as well. When it happened I pulled over, pushed the ebrake to the floor and put it in D. Turned the front wheels to see if the cv shafts were spinning. Nothing

I have a 1999 GTP and the trany went out the same way, I was driving about 10mph went to make a left turn and BAM! it only reved up, like it was in N. Could use Reverse and had drive back by manually shifting and staying under 2500 rpm, otherwise it would slip. Sorry man.

But thats the weird thing. It wasn't slipping or trying to go at all. It was just like it was in N. I didn't have reverse or any gear for that matter. It's not like it was slipping and trying to go..it's like you took out both front cv shafts. :(

Oh and if the thing is toast what is a reasonable price to fix it? The KBB trade-in vale is only like $4500 for my car and I still owe like $4500 on it so I'm kinda stuck.

I've replaced so much stuff on this car it's silly. Just got all new tires, all 4 wheel bearings. Brakes, lower control arms, tie rods, sway bar links, u/l intake manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets, mas air sensor, a few other sensors, ect ect.

Thank you, yeah I saw that link on the website after I made the thread.

Thats crazy if that happened and made no noise! I will find out today what they say.

Input shaft wouldn't be my first thought in this case. Doesn't sound like you are putting down excessive power or beating it.

I'm more inclined towards a gasket blowing out and letting pressure bleed off. Does the trans pump seem to be whining?

Nope no wine at all! The thing never missed a beat, no noises, hard/rough shifts, perfect. Then just like that it was like the car got kicked into N leaving me with nothing, no reverse, D, 3, 2, or 1. When it happened it made no nose I just felt the rev's go up and looked down and was like WTF lol. Then I looked down to make sure it was still in D, it felt like some-one was pranking me and bumped the shifter up to N. I had to have to car towed. Even after it happened I could put the car in any gear and when I would hit the gas it made no abnormal noise, it just reved the engine.

I just got a call back from the transmission shop and he said something is defiantly broken but the only way to tell exactly whats wrong, take it out and tear it apart. Full rebuild $2150 + tax with a warranty on the transmission. Which I think is fair considering the extra work involved with my exhaust. Still a huge bummer though. I've replaced the transmission/clutch in my old 89 mustang but that's a little different than this lol.

I told him go for it because I need it fixed. I'll do double payment to get this car paid off, so much has been replaced I would like to keep it for another 1-2 years before buying a new car. My power levels aren't crazy and I have snow tires on the car so It's not taking any sort of beating. I'm a little bummed to say the least.

You do realize that you are driving a 9 year old car and that most of the things you listed are considered "normal wear items" right? That list looks like normal maint. to me, with the exception of the MAF. Good that you try and keep up with it. Most people come here and wonder why their 98GTP w/eleventy billion miles on it and no maint. done won't run anymore or is making a funny sound.

Sucks on the trans. though. Never lost one entirely (not in this car anyway), but toasted OD real good, lol... I feel your pain.

Just look at it this way... Would you rather fix what you have for a few grand and only owe $4,500, or start all over again w/ a new car payment that is likely to be higher and owe 25K+?

I an not sure what tranny the G.P has but i had a similar situation in a 1994 Lumina Z34 with the 4T60 transmission. 112,000 miles approx

Drove the car to a local amusement park. No issues at all. Went to leave the amusement park and car had 1st only. As soon as you left off the gas the car acted like it was in neutral. Push the gas and tranny would engage after matcking rms to speed and run 1st as high as you wanted to push it.

Drove the car home like that and by the next day i had nothing.

Took it to a local aamco transmission shop where i was told it would need completley rebuilt $2000+.

A guy i know that was big into the luminas told me to bring it to him. So i towed it to his little handyman garage.

Turned out some valve in the transmission had cloged. There had been a recall on it that i never knew about.

Cost me a case of beer and some fliud, gasket and filter. I ran that car for another 45,000 miles before selling it with no transmission problems.

I no longer trust transmission shops.

Dang I wish I knew that!! I got it back today and the first thing he says was "do you do a lot of neutral drops" haha WTF I was like first of all I would never do that. Second it has snow tires on it...

He said the pump failed resulting in everything going. He said the 4th gear clutch whatever blew to pieces and a few of the other shafts had splines that were ready to strip. He said it was full of metal shavings...when this happened I pulled the dipstick and the fluid looked new? I was like, it didn't make any noise just seemed like I knocked it in N..he said cruising at 50mph you would of never heard it. Also he said the new rebuild came with some hardened 4th gear stuff so it will never happen again for the life of the car. I really hope so!!

I hope I didn't get scammed. Either way this guy and his wife won't have to worry about bills this week. In this economy I'm happy I could provide this guy with work, I just hope it was honest work. Thank you all for taking the time to reply to my frantic questions!

Our transmissions have a few weak things that should be addressed in a rebuild. One is the 4th clutch hub. it's a shaft with splines that aren't hardened from 97-02 and many early 03's that were built in 02.

The splines wear over time and if you accelerate/do a lot of hills where a 4th to 3rd downshift happens it gets much worse quicker. The only piece available is hardened and a typical rebuild includes this part.
