blower bearings are rattling... is this urgent?

Hey guys,

The rotor pack bearings in my blower are on their way out... its definately not the coupler because its been replaced already.

Just wondering is this something that needs to be fixed urgently, or can I put it on the back burner for a few months? Its been like this since I got the motor last July.... and I'm a bit short on cash to get it rebuilt at the moment.

I mean I don't want the blower shattering apart suddenly and sending pieces of the rotors into the engine etc...

Schwuppes, I wouldn't worry too much. I've had my M90 (supercharger) apart, and I don't see how it could fail in a way where crap could get into your engine, unless pieces of the rotors actually came off, which I've never heard of such a thing. If for some reason, you think it will fail very soon, you can always take the belt that drives the supercharger off. It will kill your performance, but it eliminates the possibility of damaging the blower.

Removing the supercharger belt doesn't "kill" performance, it reduces it noticeably. You still have plenty of freeway passing power, for example; your car will still lurch when you stomp the pedal, and a dead-stop WOT start will break the tires loose. This was all the case on my 2000 Buick Park Avenue Ultra, which had shredded its supercharger idler pulley.

The last I would want to do is remove the belt. Its really not good for the car to enter Performance enrichment with the supercharger working, all that fuel and no extra air is bad news, something can go wrong.

Did you replace the coupler with a eaton unit or a cheapo napa/parts store brand?

cheers guys,

I'm not sure what brand the coupler was replaced with... all I know is that the guy said it was a "stronger" one and more expensive.. I think it was a green color.

But there was still a bit of play in the snout after the coupler was replaced... so Im quite cetain its the rotor bearings that are the problem.

So the consensus is that I can leave it for a few more months?
