blackened exhaust tips

Hi all,

recently I picked up an '05 GTP with 37k miles on the clock. I like the car a lot, but am concerned about some black soot that was present on the exhaust tips when I bought it. The car has remote start, so i was thinking that maybe it was from the car idling a lot in the winter. Is there anything I can do (short of using a scanner) to find out the cause?

Thanks in advance,
hklvette

That means its running rich.. ie too much fuel.

If it's in completely stock form, I would think that the person that owned it before actually drove the car i.e. WOT Or the dealership wanted to see what the car would do:th_laugh-lol2:

I wouldn't be loosing sleep over it though.......rich is better then lean (to an extent)

Thanks guys,

will the pcm richen the fuel mix at all while running regular, or does it just pull timing?

my tips are polished and after a couple weeks they need cleaned. im not worried about it. car runs fine and gets usual mileage.

It just pulls timing. Just run premium.

Agreed. People complain about gas prices but if you stack them neck a neck...your paying what...$.20 more for a gallon of premium? And if your putting in 10 gallons thats 2 bucks...and your gonna gripe about that? I hope not...shouldn't have bought a car that requires it to run right if thats the case.

awesome guys thanks for the help. I plan on running marathon 93 (no alcohol) in it, but wanted to make sure that the color was normal before any "spirited" driving.
