Hi guys,

have a quick question(well, hopefully quick). Ok so, my car was missing the exhaust flange gasket. I replaced it and it is now quieter, but I now have a backfire type of noise. The car still has full power, no hesitation at all. At idle you hear the exhaust, but usually there are several "pops" that sound like a muffled backfire. I was wondering what could have happened to cause this? All that was done was to replace the gasket.
 


The plugs and wires were not disturbed during the work. However, about a week ago I went through and pulled all of the plugs and found the wire on #4 was cut all the way through. I replaced the wire and all was well until fixing the exhaust leak.
 
I hate not having time to work on my car...hopefully I can look at some stuff tonight..I plan on checking the plugs and wires over...I know there is a bad rattling in my blower...is it possible some of that is being heard in the exhaust? I have a sound clip of the exhaust..ill probably take a vid when I get home..maybe hearing the sound will be beneficial? I just think its weird that it didn't do it before fixing the exhaust leak lol

rotted res or muffler can make a backfire sound too. mine was. you dont say year or miles, but thats a possibility.

if you can get the car in the air, ramps or stands, let the car cool off. when cold, start it and get under it, with your hands keep them a few inches from the pipes, if theres a leak still you should feel it. also look for areas that are black with carbon. do this to the res, all the pipes and the mufflers.

then you can also have some one rev the engine while your under it listening for the popping sound.
