Back to the code game

Hello fellow GP owners. I have a few issues im trying to get taken care of. First i have a few codes going on.
but lets get to the point. Car has aftermarket hood the opening for ram air and exhaust out the top. It was pouring rain for like three days. but right after i got outta work the first day it was raining the car was misfiring. and gave me codes P1361 & P 1362. FIRST i thought water got in the hood and was messing something up. and that has happen before. just had to replace a coil pack last month. but i cleared those codes and now I get code for " torgue converter clutch switch stuck open" A miss firing in 4 + 5 . it happens when i try to punch gas about 50% or more. if i go slow it will get up to speed with no issue. but also no supercharger. and there for no fun. Sometime on start it will misfire bad almost jumping. then the other day i was getting on highway and the car went in neutral for about 4-5 seconds. i had to goto 3 and D, a few times to get it to get back in drive and go. after that is was ok. but for random misfires... I have done some research and think its the ICM or a short in the wires. not sure how to check if these things could be the issues but any ANY helps how to do something or what to check would be great. I have no money to waste. so im coming to you guys first before i buy things i don't need! HELP! and thank you.

As my problems change. I change the topic but its keep tread going to track whats going on over the years.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

When was the last time the plugs and wires were changed? A good way to tell if you have some bad wires is to pop the hood and fire it up in complete darkness and mist the plug wires with water. If you see any white or blue spark jumping to a ground (engine block, dogbone, etc) then you have bad wires. If you change the plugs only use the stock irridiums or a copper plug. These ignition systems do not use Platinum plugs.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

check your contacts on your coils too. I had a rusty number 3

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

Thats a great idea Fordman! I was also told to clean the MAF sensor. and deff going to take the coils off and try to look for any noticeable shorts. Thank you both!

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

You could clean the MAF as well. Just make sure you use actual MAF cleaner (they sell it at parts stores) and not throttle body or carb cleaner or you could damage it.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe? Now Stalling too

OK so iv took the MAF out and cleaned that(with MAF cleaner). air fliter. Check two of the three coils. one coil pack has a screw the the top is all striped. any ideas on that? But its all back together and took a ride and car stalled like right after i pulled out of street. couldn't get it to start with out pushing gas pedal down a few times... SO that confused me also. Going to do the spray trick tonite on the wires to see if there are any sparks or anything... i need more ideas! I did clear all codes after i put it back together. When the car missfired and stalled no codes came up.. why would that happen to? Whats my next move??

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

i just tried the mist the plug wires and didnt see any signs of arc or spark. Next i took off the MAF senser. did start to run a little better but i had my ODB 2 reader and was looking at some numbers, I dont really know what they mean. but i think one number looked odd and low.

ETC 63
SHFTFT % -0.8
LONGFT 8.6
MAP 12.4
MAF(UNPLUGED) .304

Any link to what is normal or other numbers i should look at?
i almost feel like when i put in drive and push gas at lower RPM is not getting Gas. could this be true?

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

You could have a bad MAF. If you unplug the MAF and start the car and it runs better then I would suspect it. Don't unplug the MAF with it running. When unplugged it may take a bit of feathering of the throttle to get it to run until the PCM catches on and runs off it's premapped tables.

Don't drive it hard w/ the MAF disconnected and stay out of boost for sure.

I don't have a link offhand to what the normal values are. I'd have to find them on here somewhere. Before I forget again, what year GTP are we dealing with?

On the coil pack with the stripped screw, is it the screw itself that is stripped or the ICM plate that it bolts to?

with the MAF out and the sensor before it, on the intake. With the MAF off and put in D gave little gas( with brake pedal down) got car up to about 2000 RPMs then starts to misfire. also when i take off the gas when doing that the RPMS get almost so low it stalled. like 400RPM.

The year is 98. Supercharged.
Also the coil the has the misfire is also the one with bolt top striped. cant get sockets or vice grips to catch to get to turn.Going to try again in the morning. not sure how but i gotta get it out to Swap with my other GTP (2000). thats how i found out the coil didnt work about three months ago.

Should I get ICM tested scanned at part store? I hear that sometimes there useless tho.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

Those bolts are a weird size, 5.5mm I believe. Make sure you are using the correct size.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

The sensor before the MAF should be the IAT sensor (intake air temp). You could have the ICM tested but often they show good even if they aren't. If you have a spare ICM laying around then swap it in and install your existing coils. If you still have a miss then start by replacing the coils 1 at a time until it goes away. If you replace the entire ICM and all 3 coils all at once you will never know which part(s) are bad.

They are a wierd size, and the 5.5mm is correct, but you can also use a 7/32 socket to get them out. I use it all the time. And don't have to he-man them on, just snug will work.

thanks fordman. I was going to try to get that one coil out that i coudnt yesterday and swap with other gtp in driveway (the crap one with over 300k, But never has major issues lol) I used 7/32 to get the rest out. with out issue.the bolted has been totally rounded by past owner so im going to just try to get my multi-tool out a try to cut to get a flat head screw driver in there. or i i mite just get the angle grinder out and cut the whole coil out with screw. but we will see.
again thank you Fordman for the advise! keep it coming:th_thumb-up:

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

So i did have to take the angle grinder to the coil and get it out. but after changing it with other car, It has showed much improvement but when i took it to the store. (less than 1/4 mile away) it did have some hiccups, not sure if it was a miss or just a hesitation. The Patriots are on now so going to watch then and then run to part store at halftime for new coil and see how it run to the part store. thankfully i have just got a new one a few months ago and got the warranty. so going to try and just use that to get a new one. I hope t work. Im broke broke.

Also plugged the MAF and IAT senors back in before i put other coil on to check.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

Swap coils and see if the mis follows the bad coil before you go buying a new one.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

I was thinking of doing that vinnie but after i cleared the codes the misfire code never came back up. when it was a bad misfire. So car was running bad again when i went to part store to replace coil and i checked the codes befor i went in and GOT ANOTHER CODE! P0336 crankshaift postion blah blah blah... so i went and got lucky they gave me a new coil for no charge! and on the little drive home is was running great. So im not going to mess more with it tonite. Ride to work will tell me everything. has city, highway and country roads and that just getting there. about 30 miles. Next i think im going to clean the MAP and EGR just to see how they are looking and that i know that will be done. anything eles i should do while im at it?

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

CPS isn't too bad to replace but you have to pull the crank pulley then do a CASE learn.

Re: Help! Many codes and misfiring, Icm maybe?

Personally, if it runs fine tomorrow on your way to work and no more codes show up I'd leave it be. Why tempt the fates? If you pull the EGR off the body to clean it then get a new EGR gasket or you're asking for a leak. I'd leave the MAP sensor alone as they tend to break pretty easily. If you decide to replace the crankshaft position sensor you will need to get some additional bolts as the ones that come with the balancer puller from most parts stores do NOT have the correct bolts to thread into our balancers. There is a how-to (likely from Bill) on here that shows how to replace the CKPS.

I didn't think replacing the CKPS needed a CASE relearn on the older cars but could be wrong. I replaced the one on my 00 GPGT and it runs just fine???

FYI- OEM coils seem to work best. I've had issues in the past with aftermarket ones (even new ones). If you still have issues maybe grab the coils from the other car. Hopefully the bad coil didn't take out the ICM as it did with mine.

Code P0102 now...

The coil change must have fixed the misfire! Thanks for the Help!

On to next Issues....

Now i have P0102 ( Mass or Volume air flow A circuit low)
Does that mean i need a new MAF? or is it because i have a cold ram air intake now?
I hear how hard the intake is sucking when just open the hood. On other GTP i have its nothing like that.

Re: Code P0102 now...

its either that fuse or bad wires to the maf. look for missing insulation, if you can see copper wire, the pig tail is bad.

if the wires and fuse are good, then the maf is bad. they do die and show the low circuit code.
