Axles worth a rebuild?

My passenger side has been slinging grease for a while now. Are these things worth rebuilding or should I buy new? Also what should I look for in case its too far gone from negligence? I have an ugly sound, sounds a little worse than a hub bearing.
 


Take the axle out and clean the grease off all the parts and inspect for wear, that is all you can do. If there is scoring or grooves in the balls and cage the thing to do is to purchase new axles.
I know the Haynes repair manual has a section on rebuilding the cv joints on the axles if you dare to try to rebuild them, sometimes the cost of new ones are so low it negates the effort of rebuilding your old axles.
 
The cost of the new boots is approx. 1/2 the cost of a new axle. Plus, putting the new boots on and sealing them correctly is not as easy as it looks, requires the right tool and personally, just not worth the effort. But you're more than welcome to give it a go. Like mentioned, if it hasn't been too long the boot has been compromised and dirt, water, etc., hasn't gotten into it too bad, you may be able to re-grease it and seal a new boot on it. Good luck!
 
Not worth the trouble. Every person I know that has ever done a "rebuild" on an axle has had it fail not too long afterward and ended up buying an axle afterward anyway.
