Are L36 and L67 head gaskets the same?

I though they were also. Untill i checked oreilly's. They have two seperate listings for both items.


For the L36 they are 15.00 each and for the L67 they are 30 each.



What do you know about this?

What car did you have them look up to get the L36 prices?

Edit: Comparing pictures at rock auto, the basic design is the same. Some of the passages have very slightly different shapes and sizes. In fact, on the L36 most of the passages are larger.

I'll compare the gaskets to heads when I have my L36 and L67 heads sitting next to each other.

Also, it appears that the L36 gaskets are made for a specific side, while the L67 gasket is the same for both simply flipped over.
 
I got the same info off off of oreilly's also. One left and one right for the L36 and universal for the L67.


Let me know what you find. I guess I can compare the heads tomorrow. But I don't have any gaskets.
 


I've got a pair of L67 gaskets (still in the packaging). I'm just going to use those for my top swap.

It'll be a few weeks before I can make the comparison for you.
 
im 99% sure they are exactly the same. i am unsure whether i have only used one set or both, but they look nearly identical in my eyes.
 
I asked myself the same question last time I put my heads back on. I went safe and just bought the L67 gaskets.

I've pulled full-full page pics of both gaskets at work, and the only difference I noticed was the arrow stamped into the L67 gaskets. I'll be stopping by there again today. I'll take one of my L67 gaskets with me and physically compare them.
 


Well... I compared them physically and came to the same conclusion. They're nearly identical. The pushrod openings are a bit larger on the L67 gaskets, but I don't see that as being an issue. The opening at the far top right of the gaskets (9089PT and 9918PT) are slightly different shapes, but about the same size. Nothing goes through that opening that I am aware of except some air and splashed oil.

The only thing I can think of that might matter is the crush thickness of the gasket. I'm trying to find that information right now.

EDIT: Just did some searching and it appears that the crush thicknesses are the same between the two gaskets.

That being said, I don't see why we couldn't use the L36's gaskets on the L67. If there is someone out there that has tried this before, please feel free to comment.

In FEL-PRO's, the L67 HG's have metal rings around the cylinder openings. I have not seen L36 HG's in person, but looking at pics I do not think they have these rings.
 
Well then I guess i'll be the first jackass to try them out. If they fail I'll be sure to let you guy's know.

Me too. No reason they shouldn't work. The blocks are the same, and the bottom of the heads are the same. The gaskets are even made from the same materials.

Maybe the L67 is more expensive because they sell less (fewer L67s than L36s on the road).
 
I think the L67 gaskets are more expensive because they probably had a hard time finding the arrow stamp and decided to jack up the prices just because we inconvenienced them.

Either that or because they figured they could get away with the higher price because they figured we would be willing to pay it/ wouldn't bother checking the other gasket option.
