any ideas or guidance on new to me 2000 GTP

All,
I just came into possession of a 2000 GTP this weekend (174K miles). This car has been sitting for about a year. Interior is in real good shape (no rips or tears in leather, seat works) Now, the transmisison is gone (only have reverse). Hole in the resonator pipe (loud). No brakes (hard lines under the car are rusted thru) and the rotors/calipers/brakes are all junk. The belt and pulley were gone off the supercharger. Dead battery too. The inner rocker panels are junk (rusted out). So...here is where I started. Put on new belts and three new pulleys. Changed engine oil/filter. Changed air filter. Put on new radiator hoses (upper and lower) and new t-stat and gasket and new AF. So, I fired it up last night....purrs (or growls with hole in resonator). No smoke from engine/exhaust, idle around 800 RPM. I rev up the engine to hear/see if Supercharger is working. When I rev to 4K RPM's, I can see the boost gauge flicker a bar or two, but the engine sounds like it's misfiring or missing. I let off accelerator and it goes back to normal idle and engine response. Could this be the MAF sensor or EGR?

New to GM world (never owned one), new to SC.

Next biggest question is Should I cut bait and run (only have about 200.00 in it-guy owed me money, so he basically gave me this car for 100.00) I was planning on getting a new transmission from triple edge performance, but at this point I don't know if it is worth it. Plus I will have to do new brakes and hard lines all the way around.

What say ye?

And what genius at GM put the power steering in the back of the engine like that?

Thanks,
Steve

I say run. Especially with no trans. That car is junk. If rockers are rusted, then rear strut towers are likely done as well. Unless you really really like GTP's, or need a project to work on, let it go.

If you sell it piece by piece, you will definitely make some money from it. Depends if you wanna spend the time taking things apart and waiting for buyers, and then shipping, etc.

Don't know that I want to wait that long I guess. Would sell it for 500.00 as is. Would it not be worth that? The exterior body looks great, everything seems to work on it (windows, gauges, climate control, HUD, seat)

Like said above I am willing to bet the rear strut towers are shot. I don't think it would be worth the time and money it will take to get back in dependable shape. hard to say whether you can get $500 for it. best to throw it on Craigslist at that and see if there are any takers.

If you're revving it to 4K in park/neutral you're likely bouncing off the rev limiter. That's normal. Check the rear strut towers for rust. Look in the trunk, pull back the carpet and find the top of the towers where the rear struts bolt in. Rockers all go eventually, so not a deal breaker. Brakes can be had at junkyard. Same with the trans. if you want just a stock one. Plugs/wires changed? Fuel filter? Is the CEL on? Brake lines aren't hard to do, just time consuming. I had to redo the rear lines on my 00 GT with new Ni-Cop line. No more rusty lines and will likely outlast the car, lol.

What are your goals for this car? Just a DD, spare, quick flip? If you can do your own wrenching then most of that list can be taken care of inexpensively.

Just wanted a daily driver to work (2.4 miles one way)

No plugs and wires yet..no fuel filter yet. No CEL lights (woohoo!)

The rest of the body is in GREAT shape...even the interior.

So, you can't rev above 4K in park? ok.

Ok, I called two local transmission shops. Cottman's estimate 1750-2100. AAMCO estimate 1500. Both have warranty.

I'm not going to be out racing this thing....just trying to keep miles off my truck

If you're handy with a wrench. These can be kept running pretty inexpensively. Motor should run forever and tranny should be your biggest cost. Just replace founds and filters regularly.

Ok, I went home and she started right up! (Battery on charge). I was on the fence and leaning toward keeping her. Well, I popped the trunk. Rust on the strut towers. About half a way around the mount.
Guess I'm not going to sink another dime into it.

Oh well....thanks for the forum assist.
If anyone is interested, Ill sell it for 500.00 or trade for something (that goes bang).
Later,
Steve

No rev over 4K in park because rev limiter in park. It knows when its in gear and will give you more more more. It also kicks in at 105 m.p.h. (in my 03 base, may be different for different years) unless it "tuned out". I had plenty of room to run on a back road one night, and she hit 105 and stuck solid, I know it had more....WAAAAH

How bad is the rust? Could just be the beginning. Might be able to clean it up and seal it. My GT had some on the drivers side that cleaned off and I still have solid metal there, so I just scraped it clean and coated it with some rust inhibitor. So far so good.

Srew it, I'm going to get the transmission fixed. I bought a new jack today (long story 18 yr old jack gave it up after I put the GTP on the front jack stands and then I couldn't get it down since the jack gave out). Good excuse for a new garage tool !

anyway, I"m going to start with replacing the brake lines with Ni-Copper lines, then a brake kit (when the weather gets warmer). Then figure out the transmission. I'm sure i will holler for guidance if needed. Thanks

Hit up TEP for a trans. and call it good. Grab some exhaust from the JY and swap it out. The rest we can fill in as needed.
