Antifreeze question

i jus changed my lim gaskets. I drained my antifreeze, now when i went to refill it i was told it should take almost three gallons. I filled the rad with a gallon of antifreeze and when i was in the store i grabbed the wrong stuff meant to grab 50/50 but actually got conventional. so i was told by a mechanic i could dumb my gallon of water in the reserve area and it would mix its self. But the reserve isnt pulling any of the water into the rad when the car is running it hasnt went down much at all and i let it run for 3 to 5 minutes. My question is will it pull the water and mix without harming anything?
 


you can buy a antifreeze tester for cheap, it will tell you if theres to much or to little antifreeze.

or pull the lower hose and let some drain out, top off with water.

the over flow will take the water and mix it with the rest, but the car has to get hot/ up to temp, and then cool down on its own with out touching the caps.
 
pretty much, as it heats up it pushes some out, as it cools off it sucks it back in, as long as your rad cap, lines/hoses and overflow tank cap are all tight that is.
 
you do know that any car out there can run pure water with little problem right? if your mix is off a bit i wouldn't worry to much about it. If your running pure water and you live were the snow falls every years best to have more antifreeze then to little.

Thats what I heard and it's clogging up my radiator. Gonna drain it all out soon but didn't know what coolant it can take

I've always been under the impression that a mixture that is more water will cause rest and blockages within the rad. But in the past I've been told that antifreeze has a lower boiling point then water, that's why antifreeze needed to be mixed with water (or already premixed).

Correct me if I am wrong.

google it, properly mixed antifreeze boils at 380 deg. we all know water boils a 212.

now straight antifreeze boils before water would. but your not supposed to run straight antifreeze, its to be mixed. either you mix it, or buy pre mixed, but pre mixed is a waste of money.

Very interesting. I knew about the not to run straight water or run straight antifreeze. The only confusing thing here is if straight water boils at higher temp than straight antifreeze. How does a diluted solution of both bring the boiling point higher. I'm not disagreeing with you just trying to wrap my head around it, that's all.

some smarter then us both people figured this all out decades ago.


as you may know your not supposed to run antifreeze at most drag strips, as well as nascar and such. antifreeze is pretty slick it it hits the track, so they use another additive that just raises the boiling point of the water.
 
The other thing that has to do with raising the boiling point is the pressure the rad cap lets the system hold in. There are some guys in the 3s world that run highly modified cars and live in the desert heat. The stock 3s cap holds 13 psi if I remember right. One of them discovered a TRD rad cap that holds 18 psi (?) fit perfectly and it helped keep temperatures down.
