Antenna... wtf?

I just realized something about my new (to me) 2002 GP GT. It has a large, nasty antenna coming out of the rear passenger side quarter panel...
I've been looking and drooling over all the shots on here and online of other GP's... all detailed and modded... and I just realized today that mine seems to have an antenna and the others don't.
Now that I've "noticed" it, oh my god... it sticks out like a sore thumb.
It's a style similar to this (only flat on the end not ball-like):

What the hell? Can I get rid of this thing?
I followed the line inside and it leads to some sort of FM noise eliminator black box, which is just hanging loose behind the rear seats, tucked somewhat in the top right corner. The cable leads from this box to under my rear seats.

Does anyone else have this sort of thing? Is there anyway to remove all of this junky looking stuff to something that is more stock looking?

Cheers,
Chris

if you do get rid of it youll need body work to make it look like there wasnt an antenna there. if i were you i could unscrew that one and get a shorty one and be done with it.

i thought they did away with the mast in by the end of 98 year.
My 99gt did not have one, both of my 2ks did not have one. my 98 gs does not have one and my friends 99 does not have one.

Because of that noise eliminator thing, I think it was done aftermarket. I think the previous owner had radio interference and thought a new antenna and this noise eliminator would help. Funny thing is, FM is still pretty crappy in my car. Weak signal strength and it loses the ST stereo signal all the time - go figure.
If the 2002's didn't have an antenna there, perhaps there is still one in the window like has been mentioned elsewhere? Is it in the glass? In the frame area or something?

Yeah, I realize that if I get rid of it I'd have to fix a hole in the panel. Maybe I'll look for a small fin-style to replace it :)

Cheers,
Chris
