another 4th clutch shaft shot?

So today the transmission wouldn't go into 4th gear for like a minute or so, then it shifted ok. Besides that the transmission works just fine.

My guess is that the 4th clutch shaft is almost gone. I want to put in a hardened one, but I have a couple of questions:

1. Can I change only the clutch?

2. I know we have to take down the trany, but is it necessary to pull it completely apart? I called the transmissions guy and he insists on overhauling it completely.

3. My understanding is that it's not that complicated so could the mechanic do it while he he pulls out the engine to change the camshaft?

thanks!

You could change only that, can actually be done in the car but its a pita thats why they suggest doing a rebuild anyways. Yes it would be easier while the engine is out. Although if you had a skip in the gear its most likely a valve or solenoid issue.

when u deal with trannys u want to replace everythin that is in contact with the bad part so i would not suggest only changing one part
