amp settings

I got a kenwood 1000 watt amp running at 2 ohms which is hooked up to my alpine deck with 4 volt preamp outputs. if a deck has high preamp outputs does this mean i need less gain to equal the same power from the amp thats hooked up to a 2 volt out put?

No... a higher voltage output results in: cleaner/better music and sound... as it's pretty much a "stronger" signal... in terms of loudness and db- no noticeable difference

Higher output volts does require you to turn the gain down. If your amp was set for 2volt preout the 4volt will be too strong of a signal thus giving you distortion. It will be a cleaner stronger signal which requires the amp to work less. As far as DB's go, at world finals I was running 2 JL500/1 with a phoenix gold PLD1 to each amp. One of the PLDs failed and I lost 5 DBs. I had to run the amp w/o a PLD and tried to adjust the amp best I could for my last run and still lost 1DB. So in my oppinion it does help BUT keep in mind.... PLDs was running at 8volts so going from 2v-4v might not be noticeable in DBs. My personal oppinion I would never run a deck with less than 4volts(w/o Line Driver). just me though.

you will not see distortion by turning the setting on the amp down. you will notice a difference in sound level coming out of the amp. think of the setting on the amplifier like a second volume knob.

You should be setting your gains with a Multi Meter. I don't but i'm not in Competitions either. I actually have the option of changing my voltage with my Amps remote. JCG's-GTP knows what i'm talking about (Kicker SX Amps)

Man those amps rock. So much adjustability. almost too much lol. And a Voltmeter is the proper way of doing it or you can adjust it by ear.
