air intake ?

just wondering , i was looking under the hood of my 99 gp and was wondering if removing the original air intake set-up and running a cone filter on the air intake has any advantages. i've seen the filter and pipes they sell on e-bay , worth it ? i like the car but really dont have any intentions of doing any serious modding as its my daily to and from work driver.

Well it helps the engine breathe better. There will always be arguments as to whether or not that is worth it. I would ask you to try this and let you determine whether or not the intake will help.

Go outside and jog around the block with your mouth taped close so you can only breathe through your nose. If you make it through that, then go back out and jog around the block without the tape on your mouth and see which one is easier to do.

People tend to only focus on the performance aspects of an upgrade and the quite frankly most mods are not limited to this function alone.

So my opinion is that an intake is worth it in that the engine is able to breath a bit more freely, it definitely improves (makes louder) the sound of the blower if you have one. So you kinda have to take it all under consideration. But if you look purely at performance gains, I doubt they would be significant enough to light any fires but throttle response would improve.

you tryin to kill me, that almost made me pass out........... seriously , i know it wont throw me back in the seat any harder just by doing that. just wondering more if id be harming anything , fuel milage or throttle response. doing a cold air kit like the write up i saw (which is excellent by the way)to me isnt worth that amount of time for a daily driver with no mods , but slappin a cone on if it helps i would do. you pretty much answered my questions.

Cool. I kinda put that in there for you as for the benefit of others that come in and want to know if it would help or not.

My bare MINIMUM on a car as far as mods go would be an intake and ignition, maybe some tweaks to help it run a tad bit cooler.

You're not going to be harming anything, thats for sure (unless you just use the worlds worse filter and let all kinds of gunk in your engine). Throttle response should be slightly better and I have seen cases in which a freer flowing air filter helped mileage.

I mean, maintenance people will tell you that if your filter gets clogged it will cost you mileage so it only stands to reason that increased air flow should help mileage to a point.

When I put an intake on my l36 I really noticed the gains with the butt-0-meter, I still think it is the best cheap mod you can do to these motors.

I just slapped an open cone on eht eend of the stock tubing.....I like the sound!! and yes the butt-o-meter liked it as well. better throttle response...

Why not go with a K&N drop in filter for your airbox. See how it works, then go from there.

I had one of these and it is a waste of $30. You can get a decent cone filter for a little less than that, then all you need is a piece of pipe and you got an fwi.

Yeah I would tend to agree. If you are going to do an intake, might as well do a FWI or if you want to spend the money, get an aftermarket system. But I think a FWI is better in my opinion and cheaper in the long run.

but sense its his daily driver wouldnt a regular CAI be sufficeint! cause with the FWI there would be alot more maintanence. (i need to get better at spelling) :(

LOL. FWI = FenderWell Intake. Its basically and intake where the air filter is in the drivers side fenderwell and is plumbed back to the throttle body. The idea being is that it is sealed off from engine bay heat and you get air intake temps that are much closer to ambient which is ultimately a good thing.

Oh, and you arent asking stupid questions. If you dont know, you dont know, so ask.

Think of a well programmed/tuned PCM as an amplifier to everything you do. You can mod to a point without needing one, but when you put one on its like turning the volume WAY up on you most favorite song and having the longest straightest piece of road in which to drive on with not a cop or other car anywhere to be seen.

:o thanks for the quick lesson. once it warms up out i'll see about fabbing a cai box up but , this is a daily driver so i dont want to spend a ton of time or money on it (actually i was gonna give this car to a neighbor), all the extra time and money go to the 59 & 52..... but this gp is REALLY growin on me.

since we are on the topic of intakes i was wondering where i could get a better lookin intake tubing instead of this pvc pipeing that i have, example: i like the tubing that comes with the fwi but i want to upgrade to a ram air intake eventually...any ideas? or websites i can go to? synthetic, do you know? lol

If you are going to upgrade to the ram air intakes, then dont worry about replacing what you have. They come with all you need, well at least SLP does, I havent used any of the others.

Ram air intakes and FWI's are different beasts so they will be plumbed differently. Show us some pics of your intake maybe we can come up with something.

click on my link below you will be able to see the intake on there, the ram air i want to get it on 3800performance.com and its the MotorSports Performance CAI...i just want my intake tubing to look better thats all, cause i see people's fwi pics and i like the tubing they made for that...

Well, There was a write up I read with actual stats on this. The results actually were quite high for a K&N type filter in the stock box. The Wizaired system rates high for flow. It all depends on what you want. If you want to show the car then a thrasher or wizaired kit is a route, Fender well kits can look nice with colored tubing. If you just want to make it breathe easier then drop a K&N filter in your stock box. It wont hurt anything. My gas mileage actually went up and the throttle response seemed slightly better. The K&N filter in a stock box was something I did the first weekend I had my car. I have always run those in my vehicles. they last forever.
As for the cheap kits on E-Bay dont do it. They have you remove the stock box. They sit in the bay right where all the heat is. You'll hear people call them "hot air intakes" Because thats what they do, suck in hot air from under the hood. You want to pull cooler air in. Hence a fender well intake or a wizaired system.
So in conclusion its your daily driver and just want to improve a bit, I'd go with a K&N filter and keep your stock box. Its def the cheapest way to go too. Fender kits and the wizaired kits will run you over 200 bucks with a filter. A K&N at autozone maybe 40 or 50 bucks?
Thats My .02 I hope I helped and didnt confuse you more.
