Aged driver axle

Well my driver axle is showing some age. The axle has miles left im sure but the boots are pretty brittle and one small hole in one spot. So the majority of the grease has slung out (big mess) while driving before I was aware that I even had the issue.

The quick boots were a thought but not durable enough for my comfort, a regular boot kit was considered but then I thought, ima have to take off the hub and control arm to at least free up one of the ends to get the boots on. So I figured why not just change the whole axle since I'll be half way through the whole process anyway. Ordered the axle from RockAuto already so should be here in a couple of days.

Moral of this thread is to check your axle boots on the regular bc its not very hard to have a nail or something puncture your boot while driving. And for us SuperCharged 3800s, our axles spin much faster and harder so they're more prone to being damaged especially if your heavily modded. This is something that I wasn't always worried about but I will be from now on.

Thanks, Dee....

Got my axle from RockAuto earlier, now its time to go HAM...

I installed the new axle but i forgot to take more pics. Not sure if theres a HOW TO THREAD on this topic but this isnt either. Im just showing random pics of the actual work, hope it helps someone. I'll take a pic of the installed axle tomorrow

Bingo. Get use to changing them lol you might end up doing them a few times on a Wbody within the cars lifespan. How much was it though RA? Most of us just go with a set from Napa or Advance w/ a lifetime warranty just in case.

$40 new from RA, $50 shipped to here in San Diego...Not bad at all for the brand, Cardone is good s**t

FWIW, a supercharged axle spins no faster than an NA axle. Especially since the driverside is the same axle, X miles per hour still moves the axle ast the same speed though. If you didn't get nails in the tires, I doubt one hit your axle boot. The boots flex a lot and can develop issues. Which is why a new one was so cheap.

On the way you swapped the axle, you need an alignment now. Yes there is a how to swap an axle thread.

Yeah, FireStone is two blocks away so with a lifetime free alignment it'll be no biggy... and im doing my rack n pinion at the same time so thats why the way i did it didnt really matter...

Heres where I lefted of yesterday, it was pretty easy though I doubted myself that the axle was all the way in and flush but it seems like its good. Its sitting on a slightly different angle than the way it came out so thats why it looks a lil different. On to the Rack n Pinion and some cleaning...

Yeah, I wasnt done yet. That was just how I left it yesterday, I just didnt want the brand new axle to hang there. Thanks for the concern though
