Aftermarket air intake questions

i plan on replacing my stock air filter on my 99 Grand prix GT and everything connecting it, but i have a lot of questions first that id prefer be answered by you guys instead of the chumps at my local autozone... sorry if this is a noob question or a thread thats been repeated. ive been searching for straight forward answers for the past day or two and would rather just get them so i can do this today!

1 what size cone/filter do i need? i plan on going with a spectre because of how cheap and effective they are.
2 if i wanted to replace the junk stock black plastic tubing, with the chrome spectre tubing would i be better off? does that change the size i would need? would i need any adapters for it to connect to the rest of the stock stuff? is it actually worth it?
3. Should i remove the stock airbox entirely? or should i try to make it fit into the air box, if thats even possible? i dont want to risk the filter sucking up anything it shouldnt
4. hows the install like on these? ive heard from various other sources that the PCM gets in the way? what is the typical install time and what are some common roadblocks? if there are any?

Thats all i can think of needing to know right now, again im sorry if this is a noob question, just looking for some straight forward answers so i can do this! This is my daily driver and i seem to always have the absolute worst luck with everything, the harder i try and the more independent i try to be the more i screw it all up. im sure some people can relate, we all gotta start somewhere though right??? any and all descriptive answers will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

What's the stock size of the tubing? That the filter needs to connect to? Should I get a 3"? Or a 3"+ so it can fit good?

So can I just take out the stock air box and put a spectre cone filter on the stock hosing??? Or should I just go buy some PVC and do it that way?

Right but I wanna know if I can just take the big stock box out and replace it with a filter, at the moment that's all I want to do.

lets see, we got mine.

pick your poison.

Won't an NA motor actually benefit from seeing colder air though? Granted, it probably won't be a huge difference, but the question stands. :O

Omg really? There is no question 'standing' as its been asked and answered a bazillion times!

But to be the one that answers it a Bazillion+1 times, the HEAT SOAK from the SC offsets ANY CAI so it gp doesn't really matter. Let alone once you drop pulley size and exceed stock RPM thereby generating more heat. The biggest derived benefit from open cone install is the cool sound of the SC and a slight increase in airflow.

Just get the Spectre elbow and Silicone couplings along with their cone filter, $60 install... Done and is nicest IMO.

good luck and enjoy!

It's an NA section.

I just looked at the recent threads and clicked it.

I honestly wouldn't care either way. I never noticed a difference either way.

I meant on my N/A car.

I never noticed any sh1ts lick of difference from an open cone, to some extended pipe towards the fender hole or head light, or even into the fender.

Maybe if I was going 130+ and it was 20* outside.

As others have alluded, it's all about the same, even stock airbox flows more than enough air for any N/A 3800 out there. You ought to pick the intake setup based on other factors:

Stock: Quiet, no water intrusion issues, best air filtration, free

Cone on TB / Short Ram: Louder, less clutter, easier to work around, cheap, no water intrusion issues that I'm aware of, looks cooler than stock

True CAI / FWI: Somewhat louder, slightly less clutter, more expensive, possible water intrusion issues if not careful about filter placement, looks better than stock.
