Bought the car with 109k now has 111k looked at fluid smells a little burnt and its a brownish-red. Thinking about doing a fluid change but afraid it might be too late, because of the past 100k just run the same fluid rumor. However, the tranny doesn't have any problems shifting or in overdrive. Fluid was burnt from a surging problems which turned out to be bad plugs. Anyways, you guys safe to do the fluid flush/change? I am thinking of using dex/merc synthetic with maybe lucas stop slip to thicken the fluid...in case the rumor is true.

*EDIT* Car is a 99 Buick Regal gs

your fluid is brown and burnt smelling because its got 111,000 miles on it.

drop the pan, change the filter, add lucas if you like, it cant hurt.

I've got a '92 Bonneville with 340k miles and I believe the only thing holding the tranny together is sludge and bad fluid...it's never had a fluid change.

IMO if something is fresh, and the fluid/filter are maintained, it's good. If other problems come about and you try to do a fluid/filter change as a band-aid, it doesn't help. My GTP has a fresh rebuilt tranny, so it'll likely have the fluid changed at decent intervals.

I don't build transmissions so take what I say with a grain of salt.

what year car? 97-03 i'd stick with the dex 3. or if newer, use what the manual says to use, it may even say it on the dip stick.

being that your trans is working fine, you should be ok.

its when its acting up on you, then as a last ditch effort you service the trans that gets you in the end, its to late by then.

about 8. and use dex 3. the new dex 6 is thinner. you dont want thinner fluid at this point.

so 7 quarts, and one quart of lucas.

if you have a tractor supply in your area they sell a 2 gallon jug for 30 bucks, its called "travelers" brand atf fluid. ive got 3 gallons of it in my trans for the last year almost.

thanks! and I am 100% ok right? it wont come down to my car never moving again because of the fluid changing since 8 quarts is about 75% of the fluid?

8 quarts is almost 1/2 the trannys fluid, the rest is in the torque converter for the most part.

at only 100,000, and no issues id think your in good shape.

add a shift kit??????

i picked up a used trans with 130 on it and its got a shift kit in it, shifts nice and firm with it. compared to my old trans, witch didn't have a slipping or shifting problem, i lost 3 gear.

i have no real this or that one is better info. and i have no clue what brand is even in my trans.

but people here seem to like the intense kit i think it is.

A flush my be risky but I flushed mine about every 60,000 miles and now tranny has 305,000 on it but what I am going to do from not on is change it once a year (comes to about every 30,000 miles) and not flush it anymore its messy and a pita. But what I would do if I were you is change the fluid do not flush it then in about 20,000 mile change it again kinda like flushing it slowly that way
