advice on exhaust

I've been wanting to do a cut-out on a Grand Prix GXP. But I've been pondering on where to actually place the cut-out. I've been researching and alot of people say to place them right before the mufflers on the passenger side. And should I remove the res? or is the res ok to leave on? Also, I'm leaving my cat attached. Thanks for any advice!

Alot of people do it on the down pipe, with an aftermarket exhaust they usually squeeze it in between the downpipe and cat. More raw sound and has the best benefits.

But since it's before the cat will it make it louder as well? And is it illegal no matter where the placement is?

What do you want the cut out for would be the main question? Not to discourage you in any way but as for performance gains, ehh.. And with your question about pre or post cat being "louder" I'm not sure if you want loud either.. lol

From what I understand for our cars all they do is make it loud... Most people put it in the straight piece before the pipe turns and enters the Y (where you described) because there's a nice home for it there and you can remove your rear seat to run the wiring if you go electronic. Really on stock exhaust it's kinda the only place there's room. I mean you have the flange off manifold into flex piece, then the downpipe straight into the huge cat, right after the cat you have the POS Ubend then flange, after the flange you have the res that runs the whole lenght until the first ~90 aiming the exhaust to the passenger side. I'm not sure how much space you have in your DP with a factory cat to mount there, don't think there's enough room because the stock cat's are large IIRC. It's been a while since I had a stock cat.

Now if you are wanting to go aftermarket exhaust, as Drunkie said, you have more options and that's a whole new world... :D

Only worry about it being legal when you have to have it emission tested.. LOL My Firebird has the Y after the manifolds into a 3" pipe. I have my cat flanged in right after. When I go to get it emission tested I unbolt my cutout, remove it, and install my cat. When I get home, the 6 bolts come out, cutout goes back in for the other 364 days.. :D

I have a Race Ready Performance electric cutout. Had for years. Never a problem. They do sell refurbished one just FYI

I have no cat or res. Plus I'm turbo'd so it's a little more quieter then SC'd

When I had the cut out by the rear tire, I gained 10whp. That location was mainly for sound. Then I moved it up to the downpipe and gained 25whp.

Here are pics.
